The pH crushed increases in pH much more quickly in a shorter period of time than the pHwhole. However, both level off at around 400 sec although pH crushed levels off sooner than the pH wholedoes. Crushed also appears better than whole at neutralizing according to the graph since the crushedTums is reaching the neutral pH of 7 at a faster rate than the whole Tums is. Data Table 2. Be sure to discuss specifics of your experiment for all portions of the experiment and sources of error. Refer to the UNC writing Center at (http://writingcenter.unc.edu/resources/handouts-demos/specific-writing-assignments/scientific-reports#section-22) for some help. This should be no longer than 2 paragraphs. The reason why someone will start to burp a lot if they had too much antacids is because consuming morethan the recommended amount causes a buildup of Carbon Dioxide. This is the reaction to the neutralization of the stomach acid with the antacid. As you can see in the data from our group the antacid is quite effective in neutralizing Hydrochloric Acid especially the Tums(crushed) where it reaches a pH of 6.9 at 12 minutes which is close to the neutral pH of 7.A possible source of error is that the pH electrode does turn off on it’s own after a certain amount of time so although we quickly turned it back on it’s not 100% accurate. The conclusion is that crushed antacids are more effective than whole ones for our data and that Tums is more effective than Equate. A difference though is that Tums has one more data set than Equate so maybe that’s why the averages are a little different. Tums does also have an extra active ingredient which is Magnesium Hydroxide so that may be the reason why when used to neutralize acid that the Tums increases at a faster rate than Equate. Both Equate and Tums appears to be only slightly more effective when crushed since it only increases the pH at a slightly higher rate. However, if you want quick neutralization of acid then Tums is the way to go since it is going at 1.8Min^-1 when crushed compared toEquate(crushed)1.4Min^-1. However, both seem to get the job done of neutralizing so if you prefer to savethe money and don’t mind waiting extra then Equate is the way to go. At least according to the informationgathered from our group for Tums and the information gathered for Tums from the whole class shows that crushed is more effective than whole. You can see the pH rising more rapidly when Tums is crushed in ourgraph than when Tums is whole. Both the whole and crushed neutralize the Hydrochloric acid effectively although crushed a little quicker since at 710-720 seconds it was at a pH of 6.9 which is close to the 7 that is considered neutral. Also, our data appeared to have been neutralizing at a slower rate compared to the class average however not by too much. Through this experiment we can see why consuming antacids can lead to burping and gassiness in general at the rate it’s neutralizing when you take the recommended amount not even an overdose. Furthermore, we saw what was more effective which was the Equate(whole), Tums(crushed), Tums(whole), then Equate(crushed).Balanced
