BreedingCurrent Lecture- Pigs won’t overeat, eat when they’re hungryo Give carbs & protein and will balance out diet- Pig: swine- Farrowing: giving birth- Gilt: male un-castrated- Boar: male un-castrated- Sow: female after farrowing- Barrow: castrated maleo Remove the effects of testosterone o Testosterone distributes through meat (Boar Taint) - Breed a boar to a sowo 114 days gestation o 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days- Pubertyo 4-8 months - Breedo Wait for 3rd heat cycle Pig is more mature - Estruso 1-5 days (20-30 hours period heat)- Estrouso 21 daysThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Next day give iron shot (baby pigs born anemic)o Survive in wild: root around in soil o 1 cc of irono W/o will die b/c they do not get sufficient iron from mom 4. Tail dock (not at Peckham) o Baby pigs interactive, tail biting may lead to secondary infection o Dock at ¾ an inch5. Remove needle teeth (4 sets of them)o Born w/ large pointy teetho In wild: they’re used to indicate to mom to drop milk (oxytocin kicks in)o Can injure sow & other pigletso Domestic pigs teats are sensitiveo Wild teats are desensitized from running through the brusho 3 weeks old, they fall out anyway6.
