CapitalChapter Outline1. The first chapter opens with the reoccurring theme of the book, Pepys Road. Pepys road was a street of houses which through the decades had risen in the ranks of houses to become one of the most prominent, and expensive, streets to live on. Each chapter, as you will see, describes a different character and through that character we see their visions of the street and why they belong there. Ms. Howe, recently widowed when her husband “dropped dead”. She has been living on the street since the time of her birth, for 82 years. At the end of the chapter she picks up a card slipped through her mailbox that reads “we want what you have”.2. Roger Yount is the next character in the book. He is called the proprietor and for a good reason. As Pepys road has increased drastically in price, it attracted wealthy families to buy any house onthe street available and renovate and expand the houses. This is exactly what he and his wife did, there home value being somewhere over 2 million I suspect. He works with investment banking, and oversees many workers. His main function is to compute, with formulas, the risks and benefits of investing in different countries currency. His biggest problem at hand is whether or not hewill receive his 1 million pound bonus, which although would seem a benefit to his life, is in actuality a necessity to continue his lifestyle which consumes vast amounts of money to maintain. He only makes 150k/year, and heavily relies on this bonus. Without it his life would fall to shambles with the banks foreclosing on both of his houses, the other being in the country side, his wife would most likely leave as will be told in a chapter to come, and many other bad things would come. Although he has excelled this year in the currency trading world, many other parts of the investment bank he works with have sustained losses, such as the mortgage part of the firm losing money. The company seems to be saying that if one part is doing bad, everyone is doing bad and therefore would retract bonuses. 3. Chapter 2 and 3 are connected and is described above.4. Ahmed is the next character we are introduced to. He owns a shop at the end of Papys road, which he and his family live above. He has a wife, daughter, and young son (6 or so). He works with his brother in the shop and seems to be a serious yet quiet man. His brother on the other hand in very religious (the whole family is Muslim but the brother takes it very seriously). The brother, Usman, often conceals the men’s magazines which have nude photos and covers the alcohol with shades, because the Muslim faith prohibits these things I guess. He is studying engineering at school bud is described as a “lazy fuckwit” by his brother Ahmed. Ahmed gives his daughter breakfast as he opens the shop. He too receives a card in the mail slot “We want what you have”.5. Shahid Kamal, the other brother to Ahmed, goes to work in the shop everyday. He is described as being the “dreamer” of the family. He studied marshal arts for a long time but when he received his black belt he stopped and moved on to computer programing. This was when the internet was becoming a big deal and he read a couple books on writing code and would design his friends’ websites for quick cash. He became very good at it and was offered a high paying jobto design websites with a company, but he declined and stopped doing websites all together. It seems whenever something starts to get serious in his life he just quits and moves on tosomething else. When he was 18 he smuggled himself into Czech territory to save his Muslim brothers who were being treated badly, but nothing really resulted in this and was smuggled back out when he became ill. 6. Mrs. Yount, Mr. Yount’s wife, is described in chapter 6. She has a very care free life, although shedoes not seem to think so. While her husband works 12 hour days, she “works” all day in the house. She has maids who clean, nannies to watch the kids, and contractors to fix whatever is broken. Her “work” consists of looking up were to run off to and vacation with her rich and newly single friend Saskia. She is angry that her husband thinks he can come home after work and tell her how hard his day was. She is furious that he comes home, puts his feet up, and relaxes for the remainder of time until he goes to bed. She decides to plan a trip to just leave out of nowhere as a way to tell her husband he is working hard enough I guess. She spends a lotof money and it is for this reason I predict she will be leaving Mr. Yount when he loses all his money (which has not happened yet, but the theme of this book seems to present these different lifestyles which are fine and dandy now but I can see the stock market crashing and everyone’s lives being turned upside down. 7. This chapter brings us back to the shop with Ahmed and Shahid. Ms. Howes is in the shop and falls. Ahmed brings her home and insists on delivering newspapers to her door. Ahmed walks her home and for the first time in a long time everything moves slow for him. He is used to rushing about all day dealing with customers and moving at a fast pace, but while walking this woman home he walks slow with her, as if this is a metaphor for what is to come with everythingslowing down.8. This chapter is about a black girl who works for the city giving parking tickets. She is trying to find a very nice car to ticket, which is a wager game she plays with her coworkers to see who can give a ticket to the most expensive car. She knows that occasionally football players (soccer players, this is set in London btw) sometimes stay in this one house and drive nice cars. She finds an Aston Martin Db-7, the James Bond Car and tickets it. She is studying political science and writing her dissertation on something irrelevant.9. Mickey works for the football team making sure the players get everything they need. He is prepping a rental house on Pepys road for an incoming football player. He too receives the note “we want what you have” through the mail slot. He is single and doesn’t understand why the cleaning ladies who are prepping the house don’t just become prostitutes. He knows they could make a lot more money doing that and doesn’t think it would be this bad. He also wants to bangone of the maids and considers making an offer to her, but convinces himself he is only joking. 10. Ms.
