Chem 1070 1st Edition Lecture 12 Outline of Last Lecture II. Mass ComponentIII.Molecular Formula vs. Empirical FormulaIV.Evidence of Chemical ReactionsOutline of Current Lecture V. Balancing EquationsCurrent LectureBalancing EquationsBalance equations "by inspection" with these steps:1 Check for diatomic molecules.2 Balance the metals (not Hydrogen).3 Balance the nonmetals (not Oxygen).4 Balance oxygen.5 Balance hydrogen.6 The equation should now be balanced, but recount all atoms to be sure.Reduce coefficients (if needed).ExampleC5H12 + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O ANSWER C5H12 + 8O2 ---> 5CO2 + 6H2OTry It: Zn + HCl ---> ZnCl2 + H2 So there is 1 Zn, 1HCl and the solution has 1ZnCl2, 1H2In order to solve this you must have the same number of elements on each side so first you look at the Zn, You have 1 on both sides so that is okay. Second you look at the H there is one on the left and 2 on the right so you must place a 2 in front of HCl. That stepsolves the Cl part too so all you had to do for that one was add the 2 in front of HCl. So the answer would be:These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Zn + 2HCl ---> ZnCl2 +
