Seven Years War (French & Indian War) in America (1754-1763) Decides who will the dominate power over North America France or England  Where the story begins of the Revolution France is unstoppable in American, William Pitt then takes over and is going to defeat the French but wants to make the American colonist to do the fighting, “if you supply the troops England will supply the equipment” Turning point in conflict English/American defeat the FrenchA. A Fragile Peace Between England & FranceB. Conflict in the Ohio Valley 7 of the 13 colonies come together to discuss England and France and they come to the Albany Plan of Union1. Albany Plan of Union (1754) Shows that the colonies are started to think alike Unification C. Results of the War1. Treaty of Paris (1763)2. French in N. America3. American Expectations Americans expected to gain from English Expected That French land would be open to the French’s land Expected to be rewarded for their support in the war 4. British Perceptions British solider we sent to fight was most responsible When Pitt wanted to reimburse the colonist the British freaked out in the sense that they had to pay high taxes  Shouldn’t the Americans pay for the war they fought?D. Pontiac’s Rebellion (1763-64) With the French gone the English face the Indians alone Organize the Mississippi valley region to attack the Americans to keep them from moving west into their lad Him and his warriors killed thousands of colonist, TOTAL WARFARE A need to keep British soldiers in the colonies E. Proclamation of 1763 Because of the Pontiac Rebellion, parliament passes The Proclamation of 1763 Says that American settlers are prohibited to moving west of the Appalachian mountains because it would bring conflict with Indians and it would be expensive for BritianII. Imperial Reorganization and Colonial OppositionA. George Grenville He comes to power and understand that England is deep in debt  It is only right and just that the colonist help the “mother land” The colonist should pay higher tax to pay for the war and protectionB. Writs of Assistance (1760) In the middle of the French and Indian War They are angry that the colonist are trading g with the French This angers parliament and the pass this act That authorities, British Officials, could go throughout the colonies and check for goods and smuggled goods C. Sugar Act (1764) Raise money to pay for the protection of the colonist Places a tax on the sugar and sugar related products imported from a foreing country Any money raised from the sugar act will go toward the protection of the American colonies  Anyone accused of smuggling goods would be arrested and tried by a court with a single judge ( can decide innocent or guilty) To the American colonist it is an outrageD. Stamp Act (1765) The sugar act is succeeded by this act  Imposed taxes on anything made of paper  Also outrages the Americans because there is no member of parliament elected by colonist 1. Virtual Representation They do not elect members of parliament BUT they would never do anythingthat was not in the best interest for the British empire2. Colonial ResistanceLoyal Nine & Sons of LibertyColonial Boycot Make their own clothes  Make their own tea 40% that was made in English was sold in colonies they would BOYCOTT succesfulStamp Act Congress All they want is for parliament to repeal the stamp act Nine colonies send delegates to talk about the crisis in England Draft a document and send to London 1766 parliament repeals the stamp actE. Quartering Act (1765) Those American colonies should provideBritians with basic necessitatesF. Republicanism Is a theory of government during this time and the Americans followed it  The belief that the best kind of government that exist is one that the people have power Voters who elect leaders and hold them
