Navigation Acts - Navigation Act 1- started in 1651 by the Puritans in England who had overthrownand beheaded Charles I Only English ships can be used for trade and the crews must be at least 50% English citizens- Employment = Good for economy- Works VERY wello 1660- Puritan leader dies (Cromwell)- England needs new ruler- Parliament asks Charles II to return to England to take the throne- Restoration of the Monarchy Charles II: pass own Navigation Act to get in good graces of English merchants  Wanted to make friends with the rich- Navigation Act 2 1660 Ships MUST be English  MUST have ¾ English crew Enumerated articles (tobacco, sugar, indigo, cotton) Go to England, unloaded, taxed, then can be sold- Colonists HATE Navigation Acts - Charles II sends custom officials to North America to make sure colonists follow the laws- Colonists resort to smuggling to avoid laws- Because Puritans are smuggling so much, Charles II makes Massachusetts Bay a Royal Colony - 1679- Puritans losing power- However, Puritans continue smugglingo 1684- Charles II creates a new super colony- Combines Massachusetts, Connecticut, Road Island, and New York into the Dominion ofNew Englando 1685- Charles II dies- James II (Charles’ Brother) comes to power- Appoint Edmund Andros as governor of the Dominion of New EnglandEdmund most hated man1.) Institutes religious freedom - Puritans must live with all religions- Makes a Puritan church to an Anglican church2.) Decides to tax Puritans without consent3.) Censor the press4.) Clamp down on smuggling5.) Institute new land policies- Stops all land sales- Upset at women for owning land- Not sure who owns what- James II = Catholic - Name men to office because they were Catholic - Says if his unborn child is a son he will be raised Catholic- Has a son (rumor it was actually a girl)- Parliament decides to ask James II’s oldest daughter Mary and her husband William to over throw her father/William’s uncle- William and Mary of Orange lead a fleet to overthrow James in Glorious Revolution (Rock-a-bye baby song)III. Glorious Revolution of 1688- Essentially bloodless- William and Mary create Constitutional Monarchy where they rule with Parliament - William and Mary agree to:1.) No Standing Army2.) Must summon Parliament frequently 3.) Free speech 4.) Free elections5.) Follow Magna Carta- Rights of Englishmen- PropertyIV.
