SuicideCurrent Lecture-Momo Amine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOI's) reduce the destruction of serotonin-MAOI's can cause strokes when combined with tyramine which is found in many common foods and medications.-Atypical antidepressants increase dopamine in the pleasure center and does not disrupt sexual functioning.-The controversial question of antidepressants is that it works no better than placebo's.-Do not combine medications-ECT runs a high level of electricity across the frontal lobes.-Today it is used with sedatives and muscle relaxants to ease the resulting seizures.-ECT is still quite controversial and sometimes banned because it can destroy parts of the brain.-Substance abuse does not help recover from bipolar but switches mania instead.-Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the USA, second highest among males.-Women are more likely to attempt suicide, men are more likely to succeed.-Covert suicides are disguised as accidents.-Suicide gestures are designed to look like a suicide attempt but one that will actually kill you.-Drug overdoses usually don't work, they just make you sick. Guns work.-Most people ignore signs of suicide but they should always be taken seriously.-Suicide notes mean nothing, usually just apologizes and goodbyes.-Suicides are more common in spring and summer and on Mondays.-Depression, stress, punishment, and fantasies about the afterlife are suicide explanations.-Suicide rate increases if it happens in mass media like the news or TV shows.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
