The importance of AutonomyV. 2nd theory for good lifeVI. Explanations for Desire Satisfaction TheoryCurrent LectureIII: Explanation of Hedonism Continueda.) 3.) Obviously happiness makes your life better; misery makes it worseImagine someone who is miserable (even someone who is like a talented musician, or athlete)—they’re not living at a high level of well being!Imagine two people with identical lives, yet one is happy and the second is unhappy. Whose life is better? Obviously the first.4) Our explanations always end at happinessWhy do I run so much and work so hard at it? Because I want to be in shape. Why in shape? Because I want to be healthy. Why? Because I want to be happy. Why do you want that? (there’s no answer)Can you think of something you do that doesn’t end with happiness as the ultimate explanation?5) Hedonism makes sense of the strange casesOne reason it’s hard to have like iron-clad rules for how to be happy is because some people get enjoyment out of bizarre things (masochists, people who like Arkansas football). Hedonism is good because it doesn’t care what makes you happy—strange ways of lives can be good lives, too.6) Hedonism explains why parents want happiness for their kidsParents have strong desires to make their kids happy, and strong desires for their kids to avoid misery. Hedonism makes total sense out of these facts. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.IV: The importance of Autonomy2. The importance of autonomyYet another heavy hitter. To understand the idea behind this objection, we have to talk about thebrave new worldAutonomy – the power to guide our own lives, as we like, through the exercise of our own free choicesThe idea is that sometimes we are willing to undergo serious misery, as long as we get to be the ones at the controls (or: happiness that is forced on us does not make our lives good)V: 2nd Theory for Good LifeDesire Satisfaction Theory: Maybe for some people that’s like a sure-fire recipe for improving your life, but surely it’s not like a universal thing. For some people, the key is to follow a completely different list. The point, you might think, is that the correct list depends on what your desires are.Your life goes better if and only if your desires are (largely) satisfiedIf your life goes better, then your desires are largely satisfied (???)If your desires are largely satisfied, then your life goes better (???)VI: Explanations for Desire Satisfaction Theory1. Variety of Good Livesa. Desire satisfaction can explain why-it’s because there are so many different desires2. Personal Authoritya. Personal authority about what you want= personal authority for good life. You know what you want and why you feel you have the good life.3. No objective valuesa. Lots of theories end up having to say that there are things that are valuable for you, regardless of how you feel about them. DST is good because it doesn’t ever have to say that. 4. Motivationa. If X is truly good for you (will make your life go better), then you’ll be motivated to pursue
