ANT 103 1st Edition Lecture 12Outline of Last Lecture I. Language, thought, behaviorA. Benjamin WorfB. Sapir-Worf HypothesisOutline of Current Lecture American Tongues videoI. Location A. Everyone has an accentB. “the voice from nowhere”II. Prejudice A. RacismB. Other examples Current LectureEveryone has an accent. Accents are based on regions. Even southern accents are slightly different by state. For example, a Tennessee accent is different than a Georgia accent. Still southern, but with a few different characteristics. New Yorkers have their own accent and vocabulary words that are different from the rest of thecountry. For example, they use the word “schlepp” to mean “carry.” Everybody carries something. In other words, everybody schlepps around. Westerners do not think they have an accent because it does not seem as heavy as an east coast accent. This is not true. Westerners are just so used to hearing their own accent everywhere that every other accent seems drastically different. “The voice from nowhere” is the woman who was hired to do all the phone service recordings. There is a lot of prejudiceagainst southern accents as uneducated. A lot of this, I think, stems from the southern racism against blacks so many years ago when slavery was a thing. Furthermore, southerners are prejudiced against New York accent and vice versa. They both think the other is hard to understand. No one can hide their roots forever. Eventually, friends and fiancees are going to find out, and it could mean the end of a relationship. For example, there was a woman who saw traces of a southern accent in her significant other’s voice, but did not have a problem with it until she went to meet his parents. She decided she did not want to have his southern babies and flew home. Why? That is debatable, but I think she was just prejudiced against southern
