It will focus on family as a basic social institution, and the various theoretical perspectives on the family. In addition, it will present an overview of the contemporary social scientific research on the family. The history, structure, and functions of the family will be addressed as will topics such as dating, cohabitation, marriage, parenting, family violence, and divorce. This course will follow a lecture format. These lectures are meant to complement the information contained in the chapters. There will be topics covered in your reading that are not addressed during lectures. Similarly, I will cover topics during lectures that are not addressed in the textbook. You are expected to know all of the material. No review sessions or study guides will be provided. Class announcements will be posted on eLearning Commons (eLC). You are responsible for checking those postings and for the information contained within any postings. Course Objectives You will be able to . . . - Describe the concepts, methods, and principles used in studying families from a social science perspective. - Explain why the family is a social institution. - Describe social trends influencing families and understand the social context in which families live. - Demonstrate knowledge of the many factors influencing individuals and families such as culture, gender, resources, aging, and stress. Teaching Assistants (TAs) TAs are available to answer your questions pertaining to class. TAs will collect excused absences. TAs hold office hours each week and during this time students can review previous exams, ask questions, and turn in absence documentation. Additionally, TAs will be available to answer questions via eLC. Questions about make-up work, exam scores, in-class activities, or quizzes should be emailed through eLC to the TAs. Textbook Introduction to Family Development (Edited Volume) This contains numerous readings written by various scholars with expertise in specific areas of family science. eLearning Commons and Email All students are required to have a University email account and must be able to access eLearning Commons. Allcourse materials, including exams will be on eLearning Commons. We will communicate with each other via Course Mail on eLearning Commons. You should check it daily in the afternoon and evening for any announcements for the next day. Remember, you can have eLearning Commons mail forwarded to any email account if that is easier for you. You will communicate with the TAs and instructor via eLC. COURSE POLICIES Attendance Regular attendance is expected. You should arrive on time and plan to stay for the entire class. If you come in late or must leave early, please sit in the back of the room by the door. I do not (and the TAs do not) provide lecture notes to students. You are responsible for getting class notes whenever you cannot attend. If you must miss class, it is your responsibility to find out from a classmate what you missed. If you experience an illness, accident, or other personal circumstances that inhibits your ability to attend class for an extended period of time, you should contact the VP Office for Student Affairs. Staff members in that office will assist in contacting your professors on your behalf. www.uga.edu/studentaffairs Use of computers, cell phones, cameras You may use a laptop for taking notes in this class. You must not disrupt students sitting around you. If misuse is noticed, the privilege will be taken away. Turn off your cell phones and pagers during class. Please silence them. (Yes, we can still hear them vibrate.) If you have some special need to take a call, talk to the instructor before class. Be aware that if your cell phone is seen during an exam or quiz, you will be dismissed from the exam and receive no points for it. You may NOT take photos of any kind in this class. Quizzes Periodically, quizzes will be administered. The scheduled quizzes have been noted on your syllabus. These scheduled quizzes will be administered via eLC. You will be responsible for completing your quiz online between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. The amount of time you will have access to the quiz on eLC will vary – depending on the number of questions on the quiz. These quizzes are each worth 20 points. Number of Questions Amount of Time 10 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 15 minutes 20 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 30 minutes The quiz will close at 12:15 p.m. At that time you will no longer have access to the quiz. Quizzes may appear in ANY FORMAT – not just multiple choice or true/false. If you miss an announced quiz, and you have a valid excused absence, you may make up that announced quiz. It may not be the same quiz (questions, format) that was administered to the other students. Questions CANNOT be revisited and must be answered in the order in which they are presented. This means that if you skip a question, you will not be able to return to it. You May Receive “Pop” Quizzes “Pop” quizzes are not announced. No notes, books, or other materials can be used during “pop” quizzes. These quizzes can cover anything you should have read to prepare for that particular class day, OR it can cover something that the instructor specifically told you to review/study. It can also cover anything that was addressed in ANY lecture before the quiz. (Pay attention during lectures.) If you do not submit your quiz and
