Obedience Repercussions of Nonconformity- What are the consequences of not conforming- A person may be view negatively or ostracized o Ostracism can occur at any age- Can impair our self-awareness and self-regulation- This can lead to more conforming behavior in the future to avoid these thingsTheory of psychological Reactance- Our desire for personal control (DPC) we to believe that we can think for ourselves- Higher personal control leads to lower conformity- There is a difference between ant conformity and independenceMinority Influence- People who do not conform can influence other people and shape them (process is switched)These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.o Civil rights movements can be an example- Minority groups may be delayed in expressing their views maybe because the feel threatened (minority slowness effect)- The majority views go without question (weather they be good or bad sometimes)o “Peripheral route”o If minority groups are consistent then they can be very convincing- There are single and double minorities o If a woman is advocating for women then she is a double minority becaseu her view points may not get acrossed as well as a manso A man advocating for women is a single minorityCompliance- Responding to a request from another person- foot in the door- small requests following up with Door in the face-larger requests- “That’s not all”- sweetening the deal before they can reject the original offer- Low balling- after you have gotten an agreement the you raise the stakes over timeo People have a tendency to follow through with their commitmentsFactors that influence compliance- If the person is in a positive mood people are more likely to say yes- Reciprocity- we have a sense to repay people who do good things for us- If we give people a basic reason why we are asking them to comply this results in more complianceObedience- Responding to commands of other (a direct order or an obligation)o Obedience in authority figures- Milgram’s studies of obedienceo Paired participants with an actor and then randomly assign the participant to be the teacher and the actor to be the learnero Were suppose to give a shock to the learner when they got a question wrong and they were instructed to keep going by the experimenter (the authority figure)o This was to see how far they would go and when they would disobey the experimentero Many people did go to the end of the shock board- Gender did not matter. Milgram found the results were about the same- The greater the distance to the authority figure the less obedience- Distance from the victim increases the
