They are important because every physical activity can usually be applied to one or more of these holistic characteristics. Lecture 2 (February 5)Why do we use spheres to broaden our understanding of physical activity?The spheres shows us that many activities can be applied to more than one piece of the sphere.Define the parts of the sphere:Self-Sufficiency: physical activity that is necessary to care for one’s self and can be used to judgeone’s independence.Self-Expression: Gestures are intentional movements that communicate information to others. They can replace the communication of spoken words.Work: using physical activity to produce goods and services.Education: physical activity is integral to all forms and levels of education such as writing, reading, and using a keyboard or calculator. Physical education is a given in almost all public schools in which most activities are focused on physical fitness, sports, and social responsibilities.Leisure: the state of being in which humans find deep satisfaction and contentment.Health: there is a strong relationship between physical activity and health. Low levels of physicalactivity spark the topics of high health care cost, disease prevention and treatment.Competition: occurs in our daily lives. It is usually associated with sports though it can also existin exercise.Lecture 3 (February 10)What are some factors that influence physical experience?Social environment are types and amounts of physical activity experiences someone pursues, both as a child and as an adult, that are influenced by people with whom you interact on a regular basis. Parents, peers, teachers, and coaches are all social environment influences.Personal circumstances have to do with geography, local physical activity culture, economic considerations, and personal attributes, such as self-perceptions, feelings, and competency.What two ways can experience affect physical activity?Learning is permanent alteration in the functioning of the nervous system that enables performance to achieve predetermined goals. Conditioning is temporary end state of training reflected in the performer’s possessing adequate strength, endurance, and flexibility to carry out desired task.Define extrinsic:Extrinsic approaches value physical activity because of the benefits that come from participating, such as running a race to win a trophy that shows you were the fastest. Define intrinsic: Intrinsic approaches values physical activity because of the subjective experiences embedded within the activity itself, such as drifting into a runner‘s high or running because it makes you feel good.
