Western Europe has a bunch of subcategories of music, but we will only be talking about “classical” music and the orchestra.Characteristics of “Classical” MusicClassical music is written music. It is music that is performed by professionals. This kind of musicis both secular and sacred. History has conceived this music as an evolution from “simple” to “complex”. Classical music has recognized composers.OrchestraThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. One type of instrument used in an orchestra is the cello. A cello is abowed string instrument, which would make it a chordophone. It has four strings and is a member of the violin family of musical instruments. Another instrument in an orchestra is the flute. The flute is a musical instrument of the woodwind group. It is an aerophone that producesits sound from the flow of air across an opening. Also, a French horn is an instrument used in an orchestra. The French horn is a brass instrument. The pitch of the instrument is controlled through the adjustment of lip tension in the mouthpiece and the operation of valves by the left hand. Usages of OrchestraAn orchestra in concert is a live orchestra performing. An orchestra can be used as accompaniment for ballets, plays, musicals, or vocal or instrumental soloists.
