PSY 100 1st Edition Lecture 7 Outline of Last Lecture I. Midbrain-The Limbic SystemII. Forebrain: Cerebral CortexOutline of Current Lecture – Module 5I. Nature Vs. NurtureII. EnvironmentIII. How do we study the interaction?Current LectureI. Nature Vs. NurtureA. Nature- Impact of our genes. Nurture- impact of our environment -Chromosomes, with DNA from parents, genes for eye color.B. Shared Genes- Siblings 99.98%, Parents 99.975%, Strangers 99.95%.. Monkeys 98%C. Nurture- John Locke- “We are a blank state at birth”. John B. Watson- “we a product of our environment.”-Genetics as a Blueprint? Its more accurate that genetics is a recipe for our lives. -The interaction: Height determined as genetics? Nurture view of height, nutrition affecting growth into potential height. Genetics deals the cards and Environment plays the hand. Nature Via Nurture-The Right “Oven Temperature”- Depression Genetic disposition the 5-HTTLPR Gene, Not everyone with this gene became depressed, the impact of chronic stress and having the depression gene led to this gene being expressed later on. II. EnvironmentA. Cultural Norms- Culture that we are raised in can impact how we act. Society we are in can impact our behavior.B. Environmental Enrichment- If you put one rat in a boring cage or impoverished environment with just water bottle and you look at the brain cells are less developed, if you put a rat in a more interactive cage with more enrichment, the brain is more developed and there is more neural connections. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.III. How do we study interaction?-Same environment and different genetics-> study influence of genetics->NatureA. Twin studies- Compare differences between fraternal and identical twins, which fraternal twins have sibling genetics, and identical twins have the same genetic make up, so that we can study the impact of nature and nurtureB. Adoption Studies- Identical twins separated at birth, with same DNA, but different environment, study the impact of nurture. -Different Environment and Same Genetics-> Study Influence of environment-> Nurture-Personality, how introverted and extroverted we are is determined at birth, biologically C. Intelligence- Correlation between IQ test results of identical twins are identical when raised together. Fraternal twins raised together IQ test score are less similar than the identical twins. Our intelligence is transmitted by genetics. It is not fully determined by genetics, will boost IQ a little bit, but nature does have some impact. Identical twin pairs raised apart IQ scores are not assimilar in correlation as raised together, environment influence is shown in that data. Environmental influence on genetics is the quality of school attended, and the amount of enrichment offered. -Intelligence is BOTH NATURE AND NURTURE-Evolutionary Psychology- Roots of behavior/mental process explained. Why are we the way we are today?? -Certain traits have been “selected”= Reproductive advantage-How to Pass on Those Genes. Men Want: beauty and youth. Women want: maturity and wealthParenting Investment Theory- Men deposit sperm and are done, in an evolutionary perspective, women carry the child and care for it, women want to pair wisely, men want to pair widely. Gender- “What biology initiates, culture accentuates”. Gender identities are by nature and nurture. Gendered toys influences later interests. Biological sex is biological. Gender is nature and
