Female Sexual Response CycleVI. AnatomyOutline of Current Lecture I. Questions for the DayII. OrgasmsIII. Atypical Sexual DesireIV. Midterm ExamCurrent LectureI. Questions for the Daya. How should we think about orgasms?b. How hard should we work for an orgasm?c. What function does “yanking” a scrotum play in orgasm?d. What are paraphilia?II. Orgasmsa. What is an orgasm?i. Orgasm = the discharge of accumulated neuro-muscular tension which results from sexual arousal (in physiological terms)ii. In subjective terms: a high pitch of erotic tension, lasting a fraction of a minute, but one of the most intense, profoundly satisfying human sensationsiii. In Greek, “orgasmos” means “to swell” or “to be lustful”iv. Intensy of orgasmic experience varies somewhat with:1. Age2. Physical Condition3. Context (i.e. personal attitude, activity, atmosphere)These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.b. How to (and how not to) think about sexi. Sexual intercourse is NOT a race or Olympic sportii. Quantifying your sex life with numbers/statistics doesn’t lead to healthy relationshipsiii. Do not look for formula/steps to get you or partner to orgasm1. Turns sex into work2. Takes the fun out of it!c. Goal-Centered Sexualityi. Working towards a specific final product (orgasm)ii. Follows a strict progressioniii. Example: hug – kiss – caress – touch – oral/genital – coitus – orgasm iv. Leads to unrealistic expectations and frustration in relationshipsd. Goal-Free Pleasuringi. No start or finish—circular cycle of sexual behaviorsii. Order and number of sexual behaviors is UNIMPORTANTiii. Lack of orgasm is not necessarily a probleme. Stimulus Reduction Techniquesi. Designed to stave off orgasm in menii. Women usually take 8 minutes (at least) to be ready for orgasm; men take2 to 3 minutes on averageiii. SRTs will “slow down” a man before ejaculatory inevitability sets iniv. The Squeeze Technique:1. Woman is on top2. Right before ejaculatory inevitability occurs, woman dismounts and squeezes the penis beneath the glans3. Man will lose some of his erection; sex can then continuev. Stop-Start Method:1. Prior to ejaculatory inevitability, the partners stop and take a break before continuing to have sexvi. Scrotal Ring Pull:1. Woman is on top2. Before ejaculatory inevitability, woman forms ring with fingers between the testicle and scrotum, then tugs downward3. Man will lose some of his erectionf. The Grafenberg Spoti. Located an inch or more inside vaginal canalii. Supposedly very sensitive, orgasmic spotiii. BUT not all women have one or respond in same wayIII. Atypical Sexual Desirea. Types of Sexual Desiresi. Established Desires1. Predominant desired activities that one enjoys2. MUST be present in order to become arousedii. Transitory Desires1. Not necessary for sexual arousal2. Usually incorporated into sexual behaviors through boredom, experimentation, wanting more variety in sex lifeb. Paraphiliai. Object or act is necessary for sexual pleasure/function (established desire)ii. Paraphilia = sexual arousal and gratification depends almost exclusively on an object or actioniii. At least 500 types of paraphilia existiv. Basic definitive criteria, according to the DSM-5:1. Behavior is engaged in for the purpose of sexual arousal/ gratification2. Behavior tends to be compulsive3. A clear majority of people in a given cultural setting would consider the behavior to be strange, abnormal, or deviantv. Some paraphilia:1. Exhibitionism (displaying genitals to unwilling victims)2. Pedophilia (prepubescent children)3. Voyeurism (watching others undress or have sex)4. Foot fetish5. Bestiality (animals)6. Frotteurism (rubbing genitals against unwilling victims)7. Corprophilia (feces)8. Urophilia (urine)9. Sadism (inflicting pain)10. Masochism (receiving pain)11. Autoerotic asphyxia (choking/strangulation during sexual activity)12. Klismophilia (use of enemas)13. Necrophilia (dead bodies)a. May have connection to date-rape scenarios14. Transvestism (cross-dressing for sexual arousal)a. People cross-dress for various reasonsb. Transvestites alone receive sexual arousal from dressing as the opposite genderc. 90% of transvestites out of a married sample identified as heterosexuald. 70% described themselves as someone who “has a feminine side seeking expression”e. Only 20% had appeared in public while cross-dressingf. No evidence to support theories that transvestism is caused by a bad childhood/family situationc. Fetishesi. Type of paraphiliaii. Fetish = an object or action that is a substitute for human contact in sexual behaviorsIV. Midterm Exama. Bring #2 pencils!b. Read and review:i. Chapter 1, pp. 5-9, 14-22ii. Chapter 10, pp. 248-268iii. Chapter 8, pp. 202, 213-217iv. Chapter 11, pp. 283-290, 291-292v. Chapter 12, pp. 312-314vi. Chapter 4, pp. 81-90, 96-97vii. Chapter 14, pp. 371-372, 375-381c.
