It was also played by traveling jesters, who were ridiculing society in general by the songs they sang and played. In 1648, the czar banned all musical instruments. If one was found in your possession, you could be arrested. TheBalalaika became seen as a “Russian” instrument in the late 19th century. The Balalaika today is a modern construct. A man by the name of Andre changed the Balalaika to fit his needs and created an orchestra to play classical style music on Russian folk instruments. At that time, Balalaika was being taught in schools.The Red Army Chorus is one of the major military chorus’s in the world. All of the string instruments were replaced by the balalaika. They have a folk song called “Korobeiniki”
