After gathering the data, calculate the average response time. IS NEUTRAL CONDITION TRULY FASTER? Why bother with statistics? -Our world is filled with data and we are constantly making observations -Stats help describe something we’ve seen. Also helps us sort out what’s real and important from what’s just “noise” STATSDescriptive Stats: Stats that describe (organize, summarize and describe a group of numbers). Inferential Stats: Stats that make inferences. Use data from a small sample of people to make generalizations of inferences about a larger group of people. Population: All possible people, animals etc. that we would like to know about (everything that fits into a particular category) Sample Set: We can’t test entire populations so we take sample sets of subjects and make inferences based on their results Situation Replication: If you did the experiment 10 times the outcome that was most prominentis the most confident. CALCULATING THE DIFFERENCE Incongruent condition – Neutral Condition = Difference Resampling 1. Sometimes there’s a difference but overall result is the same 2. Sometimes there is no difference 3.
