1 Probability and Statistics in Computer Science and Software Engineering Chapters 1 Introduction 2 Uncertainty Uncertainty The condition when results outcomes and the nearest remote future are not determined Lottery tickets stock prices football game outcomes weather People often turn to mathematics in an effort to predict the future Which of course cannot be done because the future is uncertain What we can do is examine data and draw conclusions about likely outcomes this is a forecast not a prediction When we forecast a future event we realize that there is a possibility that this will be wrong Our goal is make the forecast as accurate as possible 3 Course overview We will spend the first few weeks reviewing basic probability discrete and continuous random variable and families of distributions We will then turn our attention to statistics and after an introduction to the fundamental topics we will see how to Do parameter estimation on samples Create confidence intervals Do hypothesis testing Investigate statistical inference for other situations non parametric etc Study how to do regression analysis 4
