GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Stephen SelkaAfrican Diaspora Religions (ADRs)- A diaspora refers to the dispersal of people around the world, often as a result of forced movement (the transatlantic slave trade).- How did McAlister define diaspora in her article Our Lady of 115th Street?o Diaspora’s usually have a strong ongoing physical and emotional relationship to their homeland.- African Diaspora Religions (ADRs) are derived from religious beliefs and practices that enslaved Africans brought to the Americas.- Importance of ADRs:o ADRs highlight the intersection of class, gender, and sexuality and shed light on race and nation in particular o ADRs illustrate the themes of cultural resistance and appropriationo U.S is a mostly protestant country that somewhat vilifies African diaspora religions- Overview of ADRso ADRs include Santería or Regla de Ocha in Cuba, Voodoo in Haiti, Hoodoo and Conjure in the U.S, and Candomblé and Umbanda in Brazilo The extent to which ADRs are explicitly identified as African (rather than Cuban or Brazilian) varies by context. In fact, ADRs do not simply represent the transplantation of African religion to the Americas. To a large extent they represent the re-contextualization and reinterpretation of practices that Africans brought to the AmericasADR Basics- Cosmology o Humans, ancestors, and godso Orixás/ Ochas/ Lwa and other spirits  Yemanja: associated with the Ocean Oxum: associated with water, rivers Oxossi: associated with St. George Ogum: god of waro Relationship with Christianity  Images of Catholic saints - Practices o Initiation  Time consuming, 3 months Secluded, specific dieto Obligations Serve the gods through offerings  Foodo Possession A god or spirit incorporates in the body of somebody A group of drummers, singing, calls Gathered together in a circle dancing Ritual gestures of respecto Divination  “Seeing the unseen” Getting the answer to something you otherwise would not knowo Consultation  Priest makes appointments and people come to ask about healing Love spells Hate
