Transmedia StorytellingCurrent LectureArt Cinema Storytelling and Classical Storytelling Office Linebacker The director knows how to execute a joke and tell a story. It gives you something in 4 minutes that is satisfying, but leaves you with room for potential new shows. This is a big change that happened in internet video and storytelling. Our old model of internet film was a self-enclosed short story. What’s more successful, now, is the films like this that leave you with possibilities. Classical Storytelling Goal-oriented protagonist Active protagonist drives story forward Clarity Primacy of cause and effect. Expect responses. Know motivations of people. Closure By end there should be some sense of closure. This is true even for films with sequels. Invisible StyleThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute. Audience is engaged in story, we’re paying less attention to what the director does Art Cinema Storytelling Passive protagonist Protagonist is an observer rather than motivator of action. Ambiguity Rather than great sense of clarity, things just happen. Realism and open ended Sometimes there’s no lessen to be clearly drawn Strong authorial voice Like there’s an author of a movie Hybrid Interesting American movie is Zodiac. It’s a great detective movie. The detective genre is all about entering a sense of chaos and by the end there needs to be order again. Zodiac doesn’t offer that kind of clarity, but the characters still have goals. Hoyt’s Theorem The short films that make it to film festivals generally combine classical and art film storytelling traditions. They combine because clarity is still extremely important, but at the same time audiences tend to like films that leave you asking some sort of question reflecting on some aspect of it. La Ruta Natural It’s more art film than classic, however there is a story. Can map it out as chronology from beginning to end. They meet as children, their child dies. Sometimes all you need is a suggestion to show the story; they were able to show a motorcycle to suggest that the son died in a motorcycle accident. The titling is spelt backwards, the time is in reverse, maybe this suggests the play in natural route, because it shouldn’t be natural that the son died before the dad. We knowthis is an art film because we’re asking this question.Transmedia Storytelling “Film and television shows, in other words, are only a small part of the massive, extended presence of filmic and television texts across our lived environment.” J. Gray. In terms of how we experience Star Wars, for example, it’s not going back and watching the original trilogy. We experience it through T-Shirts and video games and theme park rides. If you were born after the trilogy was completed, your experience in how you got familiar with Star Wars was through a different entry point. Think of this outside of entertainment: Journalism They put out a News Paper, but have podcasts and twitter feed Kony 2012- Political advocacy that used motion picture and story telling. It had a jesture outwards. You’re not supposed to just watch it, but pass it along and share it and advocate. Fictional Storytelling “Transmedia storytelling represents a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience. Ideally, each medium makes its own unique contribution to the unfolding of the story.”- This is blogs, microblogs like twitter. It can bring us to interacting with each other. Jenkins’ 7 Principles Worldbuilding They’re building a different world. With Harry Potter, there’s a theme park. Immersion vs. Extractability The feeling that we’re immersed in the Harry Potter world and completely part of it, but we can also go home. Spreadability vs. Drillability Example with Game of Thrones. There’s a really rich world there. It’s very drillable in that level, you can go very deep. Some of the most successful franchises could spread it and take elements and make a meme about one character. Seriality Game of thrones. You can tell things across giant narratives that you can’t fit into a couple hours. Continuity vs. Multiplicity- Sometimes a character will get killed off and then somehow back again. Some aspects have to have continuity. Like Game of Thrones fans will pounce if they notice something is of. However, with some franchises there’s a multiplicity of universes. In one universe someone dies, in another, he hasn’t. Subjectivity Performance- You build a world, but you also have to build characters. It’s interesting to imagine the subjectivity of supporting character. There are different points of view. Transmedia Success Harry Potter Avengers Transmedia Failures Matrix. The spin offs haven’t worked well. There’s a video game that had a story elementthat tied into the movie, but the game play wasn’t good. Character blogs from television. Rubicon. The character talks about what’s happening. No one was playing along in the way they were trying to go with this. Transmedia Storytelling.. Feel viable or over-hyped? Drawback example is when we read a novel and the move doesn’t match Inverted pyramid. Some people just want to engage with it just because it’s fun, but thenwhat you can do as storytellers is you can create a depth for those that want to go deeper. Needs to be satisfying on its own. Sometimes it can be supplemental. There’s a hierarchy. It’s so expensive to market things these days. Franchises are popular. Sometimes franchises lose integrity, though. You have to know how far to push it. Audience Engagement: Direct, Digital, Passionate, Authentic We tend to like this kind of stuff. We participate in a way that’s more than just following along the story. Vlog Brothers: Hank and John Green They made
