GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- Germans are defeated May 8th, 1945: V-E Day- Agreement made at Yalta: 90 days after V-E Day Russians will attack Japanese on US behalf- They won’t need to do that b/c US has the Atomic bomb- President Truman had to decide whether or not do drop it- 1st and 2nd bomb are dropped and Japanese surrender- US dropped the second bomb to impress the Russians - War is over- By September, US is already conflicting with Russiao Joe Stalin issues speech “Return to Orthodox”o He says that now that Germans are taken care of, return to orthodox o Stalin appoints a new man to western desk- 1946o Scandal in Canada Igen Guzienco writes a book about Russians spying in Canada and are up to no good and should be feared No one believes him but he is telling the truth  US thinks that Russians may be doing the same to USo Beginning of Civil war in Turkey and Greece Communist vs. Non-communists Communist saw the opportunity to take power after the war- 1947o Foreign Affairs: an article written by “X” who was George Kennan Wrote that the Soviet government is like a child’s toy, it keeps going until it is contained to distract the public from all the shortageso Policy of Containment: US wants to contain the Russianso NATO: Us stops the Russians from expandingo SEATO: to stop Russians from expanding to the Southeast Asian directiono SENTAR: US stops the Russianso Harry Truman issues Truman Doctrine: if anybody fears Russians (communists) are taking over all they have to do is evoke the Truman doctrine and we will send aid and troopso In the Us Issuing Security Clearances: if you belong or gave money to an organization that is on Security Clearance list, you better explain b/c you are excused of communists action Applied fist to gov. officials, then teachers, then militaryo Russians respond to NATO by creating the Warsaw Pact If anyone in Europe fears the west, they evoke the Warsaw Pacto The World is dividedo US is having a National Tribe: Whittaker Chamber is tried and cuts deal with Gov if they let him off the hook he will tell who else is a communists Tells them Alger Hiss was a communist Alger Hiss is found guilty of perjury not b/c of being a communists  Richard Nixon : governments lawyero House Un-American Activities Committee: congressional committee that looks for un-American activities  People write to committee accusing people Process of “naming names” Committee checking Hollywood, education, - 1948o Russians cut corridors to West Berlin Berlin Airlif: every 30 seconds planes are sent o After a year, Russians decided to reopeno US passes the Marshall Plan: US pours money to the Europeans, ends the Morgenthau Plan They also had to spend money in US, helps US economyo Morgenthau Plan: is what US went into Germany at the end of the war with. Says US is going to turn Germany into a pasture, strip them of their industry  US decides this is not good b/c it makes them susceptible to
