“SUMMARY OF THE CARE AND REPAIR OF PUBLIC MYTH”The article “The Care and Repair of Public Myth” is written by “William H.McNeill”. The article is all about myths of humans about the nations across the world. Thearticle says that myth, which is on faith basis rather than fact basis, is a man’s substitute forinstinct. The author explained this with the example of myths of British people aboutEuropean wars in the scenario of Second World War which turned out in a different way. Thesame is the case with Hitler and his followers. With regard to this case, the author states that“action is rational in the long run and irrational in the short run”. Even the wisest peoplecannot completely understand the complex operations of our lives. It is better to makeamendments to our myths realizing the realities we face. This concept of the British helpedthem survive in World War II unlike the Germans who suffered a lot. The article points outhow to make a balance between myth making and myth breaking and to how to make sureabout their beliefs and actions. The article suggests that public myths can be framed based on the ideas of a freemarket and these efficiencies rely on the length of testing and making sure whether to acceptor reject those ideas and to take self-decisions. In many cases there will be no time to makeout those formulations. These myths may or may not work always and should not go beyondthe realities. Myths can be tested in sciences like physics with experimentations to make sureabout them. This is not possible with the human society. This is because human behaviors aremore sensitive and unpredictable. The article thus provides a contrast between human worldand natural sciences. In human society, various factors like religion, beliefs, faith, leadershipstyles, obedience, political impacts, etc. come into play. The article explains this with WorldWar II scenario considering discrepancies between old and new myths among differentnations involved and suggesting a need for a charismatic leader who could have a knowledgeof the past and a forecast of the future. These leaders could help in framing a new mythicalsystem to be followed by their descendants. These can be transferred through education, andinstitutions of culture and religions. The article then shows the importance of “pursuing truth, intellectual honesty andmethodological rigor” in reorganization of myths. The article mentions about the reforms inAmerica to discard the old myths or wrong notions. This could be achieved through extensiveresearch on the oppressed segments of the society. Changes were made to the democraticpractices that they followed earlier to achieve perfect equality and unity among all people. The article then presents that the actual idea about the truth is realized by discarding thewrong old notion of truth. This is supported with and example on “the truth about foreignaffairs”. The article states that human intelligence can be achieved from the gatherings of“appropriate concepts, critical variables, thresholds and transitions”. Thinking right givesthe right results about myth making and breaking. Historians relied upon some documentaryand framed myths that did not work with the changing times and changing needs of people. However it is true that complexities involve in myth making and myth breaking as these aredependent on factors that cannot be predicted. The article then describes the history of the United States to be a part of the worldhistory and shows its contrast with that of European nations and gives the need for realizingthe way of life of Americans to be a variation from many others and to accept the differencesand to interact with other cultures to keep up the foreign affairs. The need for one’s identityand the maintenance of balance between different identities competing with one another andthe need to be involved in different groups is presented in the article. The globe is full ofconflicts and one should find a way to fit into this world by making his own public identity.Diversity problems should be faced by setting up clear boundaries geographically andinteracting among one another peacefully. The violence that existed in past should beovercome with wisdom and tactics. The article then concludes by suggesting that the present leaders should find out waysto achieve “intelligible world” through the principles of
