Charlene Teters took her kids to a University of Illinois basketball game, and when the Chief came out her kids sank into the seat because they know they are Indian and have learned to respect people who get to wear the headdress. Charlene is from a traditional American Indian community and grew up new a reservation. She said, “Where she is from she is taught to respect feathers, paint, and sacred dance”. People who work for the university don’t see the chief as an insult and say it should be a compliment. Charlene protested outside of games and was spit on and yelled at. Charlene says she sees the mascot as a symbolic display of leadership.Chief Illiniwek first appeared in 1926.In 1944 there was a female chief “Princess Illiniwek”November 1989 Simon signed a petition to do away with Chief Iliniwek. Charlene moved from the University of Illinois to the Washington redskins. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
