BSC 181 1st Edition Lecture 11 Outline of Last Lecture I. Models of Secretion II. Connective Tissues OverviewIII. Proper Connective TissuesIV. Special Connective TissuesV. Muscle TissueOutline of Current Lecture VI. Cells of the EpidermisVII.Layers of the EpidermisCurrent LectureCells of the EpidermisKeratinocytes: this is most of the cells in the epidermis, and this cell produces keratinMelanocytes: these cells are found in the deepest areas of the epidermis, and something specialabout these cells is that they contain melanin. Melanin is a pigment that turns your skin dark brown or black. The purpose of these are to protect the nucleus from UV damage.Dendritic (langerhans): this is just a fancy name for white blood cells, which as we know is very important for our immune systemTactile (merkel): these are our sensory touch receptor cellsLayers of the EpidermisEpidermis: (Epi: means upon) this is the skin that is as close to the outside as it can beDermis: this is the layer that is right under the epidermis Hypodermis: (underneath the epidermis and the dermis) it is important to remember that this isnot technically the skin but it has many of its functions, it is mostly adipose tissueThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Stratum Basale: this is the very base level of the epidermis. Also called the germinating layer-where mitosis takes place. This is tightly adhered to the dermis and it is made up of a single layer of stem cells. These cells are always in replication mode.Stratum Spinosum: this is several layers thick and its cells have a “spiky” look to them, these are also attached to desmosomes, and it carries a high level of immune and pigment cellsStratum Granulosum: this layer also is many layers thick, and this is where keratin making startsStratum Lucidum: (Lucid: means clear) this is found only in thick skin and the layer is translucent. This is where you would find a couple layers of dead keratin making cells (keratinocytes)Stratum Corneum: this is 20-30 rows of cells that contain dead cells, flat cells, keratinized cells, anucleate cells, and membranous sacs. They have the function of being very tough. This helps with the protection of the
