Determining What is Considered Social Mediaa) Considering Netflix, Steam, and ElloEllo: A new form of social media that is concerned with privacy and data mining, this website allows users to pay for their profile and have full ownership over the things that they post.This has to do with Marxism and the topic of alienation that was discussed last classQ: Is Netflix considered a social media?The answer to this question would be YES. - Although Netflix and other types of social media may not follow the stereotypical structure of Facebook and Twitter, they are still considered a social media because they give the users choice and allow them to create and customize. o Consider, the Netflix production of the television series, Orange is the New Black. Netflix had introduced a new way for individuals to watch movies and television shows beyond what we are used to.Steam: A hub where individual can not only buy, but get help and even modify video games thatthey are playing. This will be the topic of discussion for the next week- Such a website has allowed society to interact the way we do with the stereotypical social media sites, but with videogames. Thus, gaming is considered to be a social media.b) Ludic ManifestoThis is an assigned paper that can be found on the Content tab on D2L.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute. ESOC 150 1st EditionLudic Manifesto: inversely means “players manifesto” and it argues that video games are the NEW, on the rise, medium for the 21st century in the same way that print had dominated the 20th century. - Modern day gaming culture allows individuals to tinker and modify the game in order forindividuals to keep playing.- This has led to the blurred distinction between gamer and game developer, since now in some sense they are the same person.- Games now tend to involve systems of thinking, large complexes that contain a cause and effect, which is different than the simple series of events type of thinking that is involved with other forms of social media.o Video games are encouraging this bigger picture thinking that entails a framework involving interrelationships. o Question remains: what happens to our empathy and emotions as we move away from one type of thinking to another.XIII. FeminismNext week, the class will be watching a series of episodes that illustrate the feminist viewpoint of today’s gaming culture. Q: What is feminism?Watch the Tedd Talk starring Courtney Martin: Not My Mother’s Feminism- 1st wave of feminists: Focused on women’s suffrage and rights as a women in order to ensure that women had equal rights compared to men.- 2nd wave of feminists: Activitsts that focused on ensuring that the changes made by the law were carried out on the streets and in homes.- 3rd wave feminists: Against the idea of strict ‘feminist nature’ (such as men haters, gener expectations due to biological differences, etc). They aimed for more intersexuality equality and fixing problems that involved ethnicity, social status, etc rather than primarily gender.However, there are basic componets of feminism that are still largely controversial within the movement itself, which is a reason that a negative connotation is often still applied to such a categorization.-In Professor Lenhart’s opinion, the two main messages of feminism:1. There are gender expectations that are prevalent and unbalanced throughout society.2. This is a problem, WE should try to fix
