Going over how we seek information A. top down processing, bottom up processing, confirmation bias Outline of Current Lecture - I. talked about big social cognition termsA. available information, how information is presented to us, how do we seek information, top down processing and schemas, bottom up processingB. watched video regarding implanting a false memory into a persons head II. went over important definitionsA. construal, subliminal messaging, priming, self fulfilling prophecyCurrent Lecture - ● sensory input → attention → short term memory → encoding → long term memory ○ (top down processing)● things you’re don't think you will see you are probably less likely to see (gorrilla in room while people are passing the ball example)● what you pay attention to will affect your → memory → which will then affect your construal (perception of a situation) ○ your construal can also affect your → perception → which will then affect your memory ● you are sometimes able to plant false memories into somebodys head because we have schemas for what this situation might have actually felt like ○ top down processing and schemas working together ○ ex. telling a man he got lost in a mall when he was little and he claims to remember it after a few times of hearing it even though it never happened ● Construal - how people perceive, understand, and interpret the world around them. Especially with how other people are acting or behaving around them These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
