The technology used is often called “modern biotechnology” or “genetic engineering”. Often referred to as GM’sWhy are GMO’s Produced•GM foods are developed – and marketed – because there is some perceived advantage •Crop Protection•Resistance against insects•Herbicide toleranceWhy are GMO’s Produced (cont’d)•“End World Hunger”•RealityMost Common GM ProductsHealth Concerns •3 mains issues:1.Allergic reactions-Children allergies have doubled since implementation in the 90s2.Gene transfer- Gene transfer from GM foods to cells of the body 3.Cross Contamination-The migration of genes from GM plants into conventional crops or related species in the wild-threatens organic farmers-affect people with prior food allergiesScientific Studies•“Long-term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize“•Two year study to follow up a 90 day study done by monsanto •The first large detectable tumors occurred at 4 and 7 months into the study •The experiment had four groups of 50 rats each: 1.control, 2.GMO corn (11%), 3.intermediate diet (22%), 4.highResults•males: liver necrosis (death) were 2.5-5.5x higher in GMO rats, 4x more likely to get tumors •females: 2-3x increase in mortality •females developed large mammary tumors before controls •Rate of mortality was not proportional to the treatment dose, reaching a threshold at the lowest (11%) or intermediate (22%) amounts of GM maize in the diet.•Basically it’s not the more GMO products you eat the worse off you areWhat people are doing to prevent GMO’s•Labeling of gmos•61 countries with over 40% of the world’s population already label genetically engineered foods, including the entire European Union.
