Matthew GuinnProfessor RobertsThe Geography of my Breakfast10-1-14Sunday morning I ate a plain oatmeal with honey for my breakfast. Many cultures eat oatmeal, but they can take on a variety of forms. You have oats which has many variations, or also porridge in different cultural settings. Oatmeal can be ate throughout the entire year due to how the crop is harvested. Most oatmeal also tend to be organic due to the simple nature of the product. Also the taste of oatmeal can greatly differ, I prefer a simple taste compared to some sugary oatmeal’s.Before I can eat oatmeal, oats have to be planted in fields which require specific environments. Most oatmeal comes from Scotland or Vermont due to the environment that is optimal for growing oats. Farmers and their children usually will gather them in Scotland and even on certain days school requires them to go home in order to help the family farm.Harvesting oats is usually done by direct heading of standing grain as soon as the crop is ripe which will help reduce grain shedding. This is the most common method to harvest oats in a bigger factory setting and also more economical. But the reapers needed to harvest the oats will have to be produced first are generally made by John Deere. But in order for the oats to get thereyou must have people to plant the seeds, which can be done automatically by machines or by hand like in Scotland. After the oats are harvested they are then sent to companies such as Quaker by truck, which requires truck drivers. Quaker then hires people, and uses machinery to mass produce the product. Which is then sent by truck yet again to grocery stores such as Krogeror Walmart. Which they have to hire employees to stock the shelves, and man the cash registers. Then the consumer comes into play and we purchase the good and then are able to consume the product. It is quite incredible to see the entire process that has to happen for me to just simplyeat a bowl of oatmeal. In the grand scheme of things, I am the smallest part of the entire chain which is extremely
