Oral Presentations for Technical Communication. Boston:Allyn and Bacon, 2000.Prerequisite: ENGL 1020 or concurrent enrollment in ENGL 1020Course DescriptionThe primary objective for each student enrolled in this class is to develop effective oral presentation skills. Class requirements will provide experience analyzing the rhetorical contexts of audiences, evaluating others’ presentations, designing effective presentations using PowerPoint software, utilizing other presentation technologies, as well as the organizing and preparing of presentations on various topics. Student presentations will be in different formats, from individual presentations, to group presentations, to mini-discussions.Course Objectives By the end of the semester, students should be able to1. Identify and utilize basic rhetorical principles for effective oratory.2. Integrate disciplinary material into various presentations.3. Use PowerPoint comfortably as an aid for presenting orally.4. Identify and apply principles of effective PowerPoint slide design.5. Critically analyze others’ presentations (and provide written feedback on them), using rhetorical principles for effective communication.6. Apply other forms of technology (that might be used in the workplace or future classes) to presentations.7. Participate in collaborative discussions about effective presenting and feedback.8. Present a total of six presentations over the course of the semester.9. Display knowledge of the role of ethics in the use of presentation technologies and communicating technical information.10. Identify ways knowledge gained in the course can be applied to workplace communication.Major Teaching Methodslectures, small group discussion, reading, quizzes, assessments of oral presentations, oral presentations, and evaluation/feedback.Special Instructional MaterialsSome materials may be placed on iLearn for easy accessibility and for out-of-class communication.Students are expected to check ilearn for materials for tests and other requirements. Ilearn is wherestudents will find a copy of the class syllabus, a class schedule, and news updates for the semester.Attendance Policy2Attendance and class participation are necessary for success in the course. Three absences are allowed. Any absence beyond the third may result in your final grade being reduced.University Plagiarism Policy (Tennessee Tech University Student Handbook – Plagiarism [Academic Regulations]): When you use (for example, quote or even summarize or paraphrase) someone else’s media, words, data, ideas, or other works, you must cite your source. You should be especially careful to avoid plagiarizing Internet sources (for example, e-mail, chat rooms, Web sites, or discussion groups). It does not matter whether you borrow material from print sources, from the Internet, from on-line data bases, or from interviews. Failure to cite your source is plagiarism. Students who plagiarize may receive an “F” or a “0” for the assignment, or an “F" for the course. You may talk about whatever topic you wish, as long as it meets the guidelines of each assignment. However, ensure that your topic is appropriate for your audience. What may be appropriate for one audience may not be appropriate for another, so choose your topics and ways you present them carefully.A DisclaimerAt times during the semester, you will be asked to consider and evaluate presentations that may convey certain political or ethical views. However, it is not the intention of the instructor to promote or encourage students to align themselves with those same views.Cell PhonesPlease set your phones to vibrate or silent, and refrain from using them during class.Grading and Evaluation ProceduresYour course grade will be determined based on the following percentages:Presentation 1 10%Presentation 2 10%Presentation 3 10%Presentation 4 10%Presentation 5 10%Presentation 6 (Final Exam) 20%Written assignments(Quizzes, outlines, reflections, peer 20% evaluations, invention, audience analyses)Class Participation 10%The presentations need to integrate knowledge of the readings and class discussions.Characteristics of the Presentations- One will be to a non-expert audience.3- There will be one group presentation (the group will receive one grade).- You will lead one group mini-discussion about a particular topic.- There will be one impromptu presentation.- One presentation will be given as if it were for an interview (you create the job description).- Several of the presentations will focus on disciplinary material. The integration of this material will be determined by the topic you choose and by the assignment requirements.Class ParticipationMany times during the semester, you will be asked to provide feedback on your peers’ work. We’ll discuss effective ways to do this, and you should do your best to provide thoughtful, considerate feedback whenever possible during these situations, whether oral or written.
