Theater notes 11/6/14A Number Q: who killed B2?A: B1Q: how did B1 die?A: he killed himself (like his mom)Q: why does saltey see Micheal Black (his son)?A: because B1 and B2 are dead and he wanted to see if he really did do a better job of parenting the second time around. Q: how did B1s mother kill herself?A: she commited sucicide by jumping infornt of the train Q: why does he comit suicide?A: because saltey was a druggie and alchohalic and didn’t treat B1 well - Stanley created b2 becsuse he wanted a do over as a father but he lies to his second son by telling him that his mother died in child birth and lies to him his entire life - First line in the play is a number - Salter may not know/ wanted the other clones—salter starts to attack B@ “Why didn’t u ask” he makes it a rhetorical question. There is a purpose to rhetorical questions(find out)- “you think id know if I wasn’t your father”- Salter tells him that he is the original - Researcher came to Bernard number 2 and said you were apart of clones= inciting incedent (event) of the play. Because this is how B2 finds out he was a colone. This happens before the play starts Q:what are 3 diffrences between micheal and the bernards?- 1) he wasn’t raised by salter 2) he is happy 3) he isn’t scared Q: how many genes do we have in common with a lettece?A: 30%Q: why does micheal say he is sorry after he tells micheal he is happy?A: bc he is insulting salter. He is happy meanwhile the 2 kids salter raised did end up so well. I am happy without you. - Other IMPORTANT david mammet play writing notes in g-d in jewish thought notebook!!!- Rules for play writingo When are converstation starts in the middle you have to LISEN ACTIVLEY! You need to figure out what they are talking about…o David mamet compares himself to john, the professor in Oleanna o How do you distinguish between tradgedy and Drame?—VERY IMPORTANT Circumstance!!! Drama has to do with circumstance and tradgedy has to do withindicidual choice—join CHOSE to stay in the room with carol or bend the rules  A tradgedy has to be the attempt of one specific person to attain one specific goal!!! And when he does or dosent get it we know the play is over.!!!!!!! He wrote a play called American Buffalo—abou theivs and con artisits- Where did the idea come from?o He had11/18/14Betrayal - In this play everyone is saying things they don’t mean—do we need to figure it out.- Q: who is emma having an affair with in the beginning of the play?- A: casey roger - Q: what does emma want form jerry in the beginning of the play?- A: she wants to get back with jerry. She is getting a divorce—dosnt call casey her current lover she calls jerry because she wants him - Q:what does emma lie about to jerry in the beginning of the play?- A: she tells Jerry that she just told Robert About the affair but really he has known for 3 years. - !! in theater as in life it is powerful to speak but sometimes more powerful not to?- How many scenes are Robert and Emma in?- A: 1 - This play is all about who gets excluded 11/20/14A chorus line- Missing first 5 mins of notes - Technical theater and design o Set Design  Most set designers are inherently introvert they are not actors! Most designers colaberate with the director  Script is the foundation—have to read it mulitiple times to find out with the meaning of the play is  What kind of theater is it?—important question for set designer  Research and discussion - They take what they know from the script and then research it - Need to know area of play wright because that effects the material - Never really stop researching as a designer - Then you discuss idealy with the entire crew to creat an overall theme tothe play- Set design, theme design…- Engernering is now envolved. Learning how to intergrade tech is becoming important  Concept drawing - Different versions of a play - Some plays have 1 location and some have 15—story boarding - And from there the set designer creates a book of brawing and drafting as an instruction manual for what the play will look like. How the play will look from the side, above… There are a ton of people who are involved in making a set  Technical director is responsible for how the set will look like from the back while a set director is respsonsible for what it looks like in the front  Safety is a huge concern in theater and its something to be respcted  Senic drapes- Long one in the back=traveler and it can fly - Side ones=legs - Short ones= boarders - Costume designo Starts with a concept and reading a script o It’s a blank script usally there are not direct directions of what somone should be wearing o Its important to not look at the original and mimic it because you want it to be original o Its important to keep an era in mind  Then do research as to what the style and dress was like in that area o How do you make each character different but also a cohesive unit (esp an issue for a chorus line because there are so many characters on stage all at once for basically the entirety of the show) o You fist think of silouet o And then discuss color  What kind of color pallet do you want? Whats appealing to the eyes? What colors represent the time that they play takes place  What characters are standing next to eachother so that the colors of their costumes go well together  How do you balance the colors on stage so that the eye isn’t drawn just to one era.  Using the same color in different shades can help make characters unified but also unique  A color can also represent a characters personality - Ex: cassy in a chorus line wears maroon one of the more stand out colorsbecause she was the stand out - The directors in the play where gray because the focus isn’t on them since they arnt auditioning o Sometimes need to adjust costumes for time change purposes  You can have quick rigid—velcore and snaps help make for a quick change Also stretchy fabric—all the actos need to do is dive through the shirt and stretch through the skirts/pants  Pulling costume= taking costume form storage/ pulling it from stock of costumes- The big 4 of design o Sound o Light o Set o Costume - Stage management o Involved from before production starts till after production finishes o Starts by reading the script even mulitiple times  Will look out for any immediate sound cues  Or any props that are needed o Needs help  Called
