GHY 104 1st Edition Lecture 7Ch. 5 Global TemperaturesHeat ≠ Temperatures- Heat is a form of energy that flows from one system or object to another because the two are different temperatures - Temperature is the average kinetic energy (motion) of individual molecules in matter.- We feel the effect of temperature as the sensible heat transfer from warmer objects to cooler objects (e.g. jumping into a cool lake)- Temperature and Heat are related because ∆ in temperature are caused by absorption or emission (gain or loss) of heat energy.- Heat Energy is commonly used to describe energy that is added to or removed from a system or substance.Latitude and Temperature- Latitude affects:- Insolation- Sun Angles- Daylength- Altitude- High altitudes have lower annual average- Thin atmosphere means less sensible heat- Easier to get sunburned in high altitudesLand – Water Heating Differences1. Evaporation (84% form oceans)- Turns to water vapor, heat energy (sensible heat) absorbed in process and is stored in water vapor at latent heat2. Transparency (penetration of insolation; soil vs. H2O)These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.3. Specific Heat (differs among objects)- Increased in temperature in a substance when energy is absorbed. The amount of heat, measured in calories, required to raise the temperature of one gram of a substance by one Celsius degree.- Land = low, Water = high (4x that of land)4. Movement (vertical mixing; ocean current mixing)5. Ocean currents and sea surface temperatures (spread of energy spatially = Horizontal Mixing)- Land loses heat more rapidly than water- All this leads to this important concept; Marine vs. Continental Effects on TemperatureLand is Opaque.Clouds lower daily max temperatures and Raise nighttime min.
