PSYCH 330 1st Edition Lecture 1I.The nervous system:-Our nervous system is divided into the central nervous system(CNS) and the peripheral nervous system(PNS). -The CNS is composed of just the brain and spinal cord -The PNS is everything else. It is comprised of your nerves that sense the world and communicate with your CNS The PNS is split into the somatic and autonomic systems. -Somatic system=cranial/spinal nerves-Autonomic system=your calming sympathetic nervous system(fight or flight) and the your arousing parasympathetic nervous system(rest and digest). II. The Brain:-On a surface level:-The bumps=gyri, The grooves=sulci, deep grooves=fissures-Meninges is the protective tissue surrounding the brain -has 3 layers: outermost layer is pia mater->arachnoid-> (subarachnoid space filled with cerebral spinal fluid(CSF))-> the innermost layer is the dia mater -Brain itself is divided into three sections forebrain/midbrain/hindbrain-Forebrain= telencephalon + diencephalon-Telencephalon includes -cortex made of white matter(dense areas of axons that are covered in fat) gray -matter(dense areas of blood vessels)-lobes(frontal[decision making], parietal[movement], -temporal[taste/language], occipital[visual processing])-basal ganglia thats involved in movement -amygdala -hippocampus thats involved in learning/memory -Diencephalon includes the hypothalmus and thalmus -Midbrain= mesencephalon-Mesencephalon includes tectum and tegmentumThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
