Balance and proportion of being in the world. 2. Comportment: endless states of negotiation within Southern imaginaries. How aesthetics actually work. What are the measures? Notion of discernment: idea of judgement. Observing values, failures, etc. The ability to render or assign value on the basis of knowledge. Notion of taste: problematic. Taste is the idea of preference that is linked to something that is curatorial and sorrel. Body of knowledge that is possessed an brought into play through acts of judgement. Our task is to lay out framework for southern aesthetics. Create an exhibitionHow would you illustrate or make visible an underlying notion of Southern aesthetics? Fashion exhibition: Sunday best vs. Work Clothes. The ugly would be conforming. Pretty Southern Belle: exposing corset and conforming to one taste to fit one aesthetic. Guest in Room: hospitality vs. hostility. Musical Production: bluegrass and country music versus slave spirituals. Celebration and oppression. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
