Connection to NietzcheCurrent LectureDiscussion over Survey Results:What are some examples of Mainline Protestant Christianity?- United Methodist Church- Evangelical Lutheran Church- Presbyterian Church- Episcopal Church- American Baptist Church- The United Church of ChristThe people who associated themselves with “Other Christianity”, what does that include?- An example of “Other Christianity” is Non-Denominational. o Non-Denominational: They don’t associate themselves with a specific group or group’s beliefs.o However, the Non-Denominational church has structure like other churches. Therefore, can be looked at as an oxymoron from some point of views.What are some reasons you would read certain literature that you may disagree with?- To challenge yourself and become more confident in your own beliefs.- To understand an opponent in a debate.- To gain an ethical point-of-view with an open-heartedness.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. It was unusual for this character development to be in a television show, but nowadays there is more of open-mindedness towards same-sex relationships in television.- This shows how quickly our culture has changed. It can be argued that our perception has changed, but not our attitudes.Schism: A division between people, usually belonging to an organization, movement, or religious denomination.Nietzche- (1844-1900); couldn’t publish books & was unrecognized. His last book published was Ecce Homo. Became known after death.- Important thinker- Parable “God is Dead”, is the “madman” in the story asking if God is dead?o The “madman” is not celebrating, he’s freaking outo “Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the horizon” Sailors use the horizon to maintain orientation and balance on the ship Nietzche uses this metaphor to describe that God gives us orientation andbalance as the horizon does to sailors.o Is Nietzche considering himself as the “madman”?o Scene: Stumbles into a “market place” of non-believerso Symbolism: Lighting a lamp in daylight symbolizes of belief You think it’s well lit but something is dark in the light.- Enlightenment: a European intellectual movement of the late 17th and 18th centuries emphasizing reason and individualism rather than traditiono Sapere Aude: Dare to be wise (latin)o If you have power of reason (science), there is no need for a God.o You think about it, but can’t see the argumentDiogenes › One of the first cynics. “God is in his heaven and all is right with the world.”- Cynic: A person who questions whether something will happen or whether it is worthwhile.What are some answers to “Where is God?”- Here- Church- Heaven- EverywhereWhy are they mocking in Nietzche’s parable?- They are fearful of truthMadness is devine: Given by God- Vicious vs. Devine/Virtuous- Plato › Madness is divine.
