PSYCH 370 1st Edition Lecture 3- Freud 2- Rorschach Inkblot Tests o What do you see in the ambiguous inkbloto Answer to what you see tells something about your mental state/ how you feel about certain situations/things - Instinctual Energyo Hypothetical buildup and release of instinctual energy drives personalityo Instinctual Energy Source – biological processes Pressure – rising an falling with drive  Aim – tension reduction - Intrinsically pleasurable Object - Whatever satisfies the drive - Source of individual differences- Instinctual plasticity - Structure of Personality o ID – Primary Process (irrational)/ Pleasure Principal/ present at birth Entirely unconscious Primitive part of psychology/ engine of personality  Operates according to pleasure principal Needs instant gratification Unconnected to reality/could hallucinate what it needs o Ego – Secondary Process (rational)/ Reality Principal  Well developed in people  Resides in conscious mind – acting as interface between ID and Reality Driven by ID’s needs Job to satisfy ID needs but in realistic way  Operates Rationally – realizes ID only satisfied for so long and can plan ahead to be prepared for new needs  Source of intellectual thought  Does not have sense of morality by itselfo Super Ego – Conscience/ ego ideal Locus of moral sense  Has image of right and wrong/ wants to avoid punishment and attain approval  Largely irrational - Values obtained in childhood are very rigid - Tend to not change with changing atmosphere These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
