CC 301 1st Edition Lecture 3Outline of Last Lecture I. Different time periods depicted through pottery and epic poems.Outline of Current Lecture II. In Media Res: The Odyssey begins mid storyIII. Influence of the GodsIV. Agamemnon vs. OdysseusV. Athena works to save OdysseusCurrent LectureIn Medias Res: this means that it begins in the middle. Odysseus was said to be a man of many ways meaning that he has a lot of experience and he has travelled a lot. Telemachaos is where it begins because it starts with him wondering how to take care of the suitors that are in his home and how to find his father and get rid of the suitors. Polyphemus was blinded by Odysseus and since Poseidon was the God that created Cyclops that is what started the feud between the two. Influence of the GodsOne might assume that the Gods are responsible for everything but that does not relieve human beings responsibility of monitoring their own things.Zeus’s complaint is “why do you humans always blame us gods for your problems?”Aegistuts and Clymmenestra plotted that they would murder Agamemnon when he returned fromthe Trojan War and they did that when he was taking a shower after coming home from war, because Agammemnons father had killed some of Thyestes’ children. His son later comes and ends up killing people as vengeance for Agamemnon and ended up murdering his own mother as well. Parallels between Agamemnon from the Iliad and Odysseus from the Odyssey:These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute. At several points in the Odyssey there are points of comparison between the situation that transpired in Agamemnon’s household and what is going on in Itaka in Odysseus’ household. In each case you’ve got an absent hero that has gone off to fight in Troy. Agamemnon Odysseus (gone for multiple years without a trace)Clytemnestra PenelopeAegisthus suitors Orestes TelemachusThe suitors that are moving in on Penelope are just like Aegisthus because they are knowingly committing evil.Athena works to save OdysseusAfter Zeus’ speech, Athena speaks up. Athena is the goddess of wisdom and the patron of heros. “You say we gods are never to blame but what about Odysseus? He’s a good man that wants to go home but Poseidon the god of the sea has a grudge against him”Athena has been disguising herself as Mentes, as some sort of mentor for Telemachus. The suitors have their side of the story where the start to assume that Penelope is leading them onmainly Antinous who is sort of leading the suitors. The suitors discovered that although she pretended to weave a tapestry finalizing odysseus’ disappearance during the day but then would unweave it during the night. Telemachus announces to everyone that he is traveling to figure out what happened to his father and he will give Penelope up to marriage if he has learned that his father has disappeared. Word mentor derived from Mentes..Pg 45, lines 229 and following:The suitors were all young men from noble families and the implication was that whoever was tomarry Penelope would in fact end up taking Odysseus’ place as king. The Odyssey warns us against the political vacuum of a lost king, and the Iliad warned us againstthe opposite danger of an over powerful king…Menelaus talks about the one time that he encountered the sea god Proneus. And to learn about his own destiny was to wrestle this prophetic sea god while he changed shapes and the only way to do that was to lie in wait under seal skins….Among the things that Proteus told him there was a little bit about Odysseus, pg 79 lines 555. This is what Menelaus tells Telemachus so that he now knows that his father is indeed alive.Hermes tells Kalypso that it is time to let Odysseus go. So, Kalypso had offered Odysseus immortality if he would stay with her. She promised Odysseus a lot of things but it would just be the two of them…Odysseus would reject though because there would be no society of men for him to interact with even though he would have this beautiful
