IST 195 1st Edition Lecture 5Outline of Last Lecture I. What is the Cloud?II. Why the Cloud?III. Types of Cloud ComputingOutline of Current Lecture IV. ExcelV. Tools on ExcelVI. VLOOKUPVII. Pivot TablesCurrent LectureExcel - Microsoft Excel is used by companies to measure and analyze data - Companies want to hire students that don't just know how to open and save Excel, but really USE Excel to analyze and make reports more functional - alternatives to Excel is Google Spreadsheets and Zoho Tools on Excel - formula - allows you to create instructions using mathematical expressions and commands (add, subtract, multiply, exponents, etc.), formulas you can build on your own o you can use Excel to solve a formula o Remember PEMDAS (http://www.mathgoodies.com/games/PEMDAS/) - function - preprogrammed formulas o finding the SUM, AVERAGE, IF/THEN, MIN, MAX o functions are in the "AutoSum" section of Excel - conditional formatting - format a cell based on a value (add color or attributes to certain types ofvalues to help make more functional reports) - sparkline - small chart that analyzes a single row of data VLOOKUP - VLOOKUP (vertical lookup) - retrieves information from an Excel database based off an identifier; o VLOOKUP is a type of function o identify the sections with the data you are searching o lookup value, table array o VLOOKUP searches vertically, HLOOKUP searches horizontally - identifier - the factors/variables in the database (name, age, grades, etc.) These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Pivot Tables - delimited - separate the values in each row with specific character (ex. comma, semi-colon, etc.) o delimited files help move from database to database o the known character (like a comma) allows import/export of database files - pivot table - enables you to quickly analyze and summarize large amounts of
