The Power of Relationships- It is associated with our strong emotions- Serves as a buffer against stress and poor health2.) The Need to Belong- Innate drive to connect from social bonds- We form bonds easily- We are distressed when we lose a bond- Isolation is used as punishmentOur Focus on intimate relationships means that we will not consider a wide variety of the interactions that you have with others each day. Although our casual interactions with strangers, acquaintances, and others can be very influential, there is something special about intimate relationships. There is a human need to belong in close relationships, and it the need is not met, a variety of problems follow. Our need to belong is presumed to necessitate “regular social contact with those to whom one feels connected.” We don’t need a lot of close relationships, just a few; when the need to belong is satiated, our drive to form additional relationships is reduced. People live happier, healthier, longer lives when they’re closely connected to others than they do when they’re on their own.3.) The Big 5 Personality Traits (O.C.E.A.N.)a) Openness to experience- the degree to which people are imaginative and artistic vs. conforming and uncreative.b) Conscientiousness- the extent to which people are industrious, dependable, and orderly vs. unreliable and careless.c) Extraversion- the extent to which people are outgoing, assertive, and sociable vs. cautious, reclusive, and shy.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
