FDNS 4600 1st Edition Lecture 12Outline of Past Lecture I. Gluten-free labeling II. HEALTH CLAIMSOutline of Current LectureI. Research Methods II. What We Eat and DrinkIII. Safety and EfficacyIV. Case report - the case of the egg manV. Meta-analysis of cohort studiesCurrent LectureI. Research Methods a. Case reports- usually a single personb. Case series- all studies are leading in the same directionc. Cross-sectional studies- a lot of people and measure what they are eating and seeing the issues they have.d. Case control studies- studies people with a certain condition and a control group to see difference.e. Cohort studies- large group of people and follow them over time.f. RCT- Randomize Control Test- randomly assign to groups g. Systematic reviews, meta-analyses- combined types of research h. Policy analysis-use data to create policy i. In the Hierarchy of Evidence, the top is where the most solid research is. II. What We Eat and Drinka. Toxins- intrinsic to the food, can be dangerous in some dosesb. Contaminants- toxic but its not supposed to be there yet it is.III. Safety and Efficacya. Biomarkers- way to tell if something is dangerous or notIV. Case report - the case of the egg mana. Normal cholesterol is 200 mg/dlb. How can we use this study to determine whether eggs influence serum cholesterol?i. This is just one person so it does not reflect the population. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.ii. Not applicable because a usual person does not eat 20-30 eggs per day.iii. This case is an extreme outlier. VI. Meta-analysis of cohort studiesa. Looked for studies all over the world, and processed them to find studies that would be useful to analyze. b. Had 8 different research studies included in the study.i. In risk for coronary heart disease- study found that if the relative risk (RR) is one it would be the same if a person was eating eggs or not.1. The more eggs you eat does not increase your risk because the best fit line is flat and not increasing.ii. Stroke- RR=1 means there is no risk1. The best fit line is decreasing but is not statistically sound to proveeggs help, but it shows they did not harm. iii. Conclusion: eggs are not associated with risk of coronary heart diseases or
