What we think we know from Genetics and Anthropology- Humans have been on the planet for around 2.5 million years.- Around 9-11,000 years ago agricultural societies started INDEPENDANTLY and 5-7locations. Origins of Agriculture: Crops- Different grasses (cereals) and legumes are domesticated by separate isolated cultures around the world. Cool fact: your body can make almost any protein needed.C. Early Views of H-G societya. Scientific investigation can find evidence using: Artifacts and remains- In 1961, Hobbes describes Pre-Agg society as “…solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short”o Not the case. They were well-fed and didn’t work hard. o They had sophisticated social structures and rituals.- Archaeologists get an idea of H-G diet and health through:o Carbon Chemistry (aprox. age)o Skeletal Morphology ex: teeth (disease and diet)- In general Pre-Agg humans were:o Tallero Had better teetho And a lower incidence of disease- Phytolith (siliceous plant remains) are important in telling about their diet.- Their art (pottery and sculptures) and technology (arrowheads) show us their body types and tools for hunting and gathering.b. Scientific investigations can find evidence using: Studies; ethnobotony, cultural anthropology, etc.- Carrying Capacity: level of human sustainability in a group.- Food scarcity NOT common. Longer birth date, Delayed marriage, higher mid-agemortality vs elder and infant mortality. Overall, Food was abundant and would only have to go out 2-3 times a week, they didn’tplant or sow seeds because of lack of intelligence, but because they saw no need to, andthey had intricate knowledge of plants, because they had to gather them and not
