They involve economics, public policy, politics, environmental science, physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, psychology… The environment is a chaotic system, with limited predictability (human behavior is also unpredictable). Making the “right” decisions entails a complicated cost-benefit analysis. Having a grasp of the important scientific issues is a good starting point… Aug. 27, 2014 PHYS/ENVS 3070 16 ENERGY*AND*ENVIRONMENT*Note that this is a physics course! The class has no prerequisites except algebra and logical thinking. Many issues we will cover are complex, and can be emotional with strong opinions on different sides. This is not physics such as if I slide a block down an incline plane without friction…. But still, it is subject to quantitative logical scientific reasoning. We will focus on facts and technical aspects here. Aug. 27, 2014 PHYS/ENVS 3070 17My goal in this course is to teach you how to be a mini- (or general) Energy Analyst You see a talk with a “brilliant” “new” “green” idea! But is it a good idea? Does it deserve your support, your investment, your vote? At the end you should be able to work through the numbers, look for the “gotchas” The “Cornucopians” vs “The Long Emergency” Aug. 27, 2014 PHYS/ENVS 3070 18Scientifically true statement: The more fire trucks that are sent to fight a fire, the more damage the fire does. Correlation or Causation? Caution I Aug. 27, 2014 PHYS/ENVS 3070 19Caution II Newspaper articles (i.e. popular press) often briefly summarize what reporters have “learned” in 5-10 minutes from what researchers have been working on for years. These articles need to be viewed with caution and for research should be backed up with more detailed source material. Aug. 27, 2014 PHYS/ENVS 3070 20YES! Is Calculus necessary? NO!
