Puritans - Middle-Upper Class (lawyers, merchants, master craftsmen) - Purify Church of England - “On a mission from God” City on a hill (perfect society)  Model community for the world- England- everyone must pay taxes to support the Church of England - Some puritans were members of parliament  Wanted to change the tax law o Late 1620s- King Charles in charge - Decides to rule as absolute ruler- Thought he had divine right- Charles does not call parliament into session (puritans can't change law)- Puritans form joint stock Company  Massachusetts Bay Colony- Decide to go to North America and start model community o 1630- Large numbers of puritans in Massachusetts - John Winthrop- / Arbellao 1630-1643- Puritan great migration - ~ 20,000 Puritans to Massachusetts- Turn Massachusetts Bay Colony into their governmento 1643- English Civil War - Royalists vs. Commonwealth (puritans)  Puritans won and beheaded King Charles o 1649- Puritans in charge in England (also in
