Know how to grow tobacco Note: Indentured Servitude is what you do if you want land but cannot get any in England. Unfortunately, indentured servants were treated a lot worse in Jamestown than in England. - Problem- No money in Virginia (all trade)- Indentured Servants were traded like they were money or property (slaves = property)- Courts in VA different from courts in England ( if they complained, the courts would order that a nail be stuck through their tongues) Elizabeth and Elias were two indentured servants that were beat up daily until they died (example of harsh treated end of servants) - Proctors never punished People in Virginiao 1629- 2,600o 1640- 8,000o 1653- 14,000o 1660- 25,000Note: Be able to compare women in Virginia to Puritan women - Women in Virginia inherit everything after husband dies Remarry or stay single - Puritan Women NEVER in powerIV. Fewer indentured servants coming from England - Improvement in English colony- Heard about the working conditions in VA2. Economically better to own slaves 3. Political conflict between former indentured servants and their masters - Former servants could vote if they owned land - Couldn't happen if they were in different countries - Slaves = Less Conflict - Transition from indentured servants to slaves  Fairly easy  Already separated quarters  Already work in gangs with overseers  Already use whipping as a punishment  Already underfed and underclothed Already live in fear of rebellion (indentured servants) o 1700- ½ of labor force in VA is black (free and slaves)- New Laws 1. 1662- Children will be salve or free depending on status of mother 2. 1670- Forbid free blacks and Indians to own “Christian” servants (white)3. 1680- 30 lashes to any slave who hits a “Christian” 4. 1691- Banned interracial marriage 5. 1700s- Banned interracial marriage again 6. 1705- A white person had to be whipped with their clothing on, but a person of color got whipped without clothing Note: Slaves are the best way to earn
