Self-esteemI Theories on how to handle self-esteemSelf-Presentation- “We are actors in our own lives” we have certain goals that we want to achieve whether it be making a good impression when we first meet people- We want people to feel a certain way about us – strategic self presentationo Gaining acceptanceo Demonstrate competence- Whenever we are presenting ourselves it always takes a lot of self-regulation These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- We may not always present the self we want we may make mistakes and that may engage the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) you could even feel thins if a friend makes a mistake because you also care about there self-presentation- Dual-Process Modelo Automatically Occurs when are around people we know. (We don’t have to self-regulate as much)o Deliberately occurs when we meet new people- It is different because we are not worried about being evaluated by people we know. Also different situations can be harder eg. Going on a job interview vs. hanging out with friendsInfluences of technology and self-presentation - Social networking’s creates different opportunities for self presentationo Do we present our actual self more or our ideal self? (Generally people present there actual self through social networks)Self-Presentation strategies- Different goals lead to different strategies- Ingratiation: which means completing people to gain acceptanceo Could be viewed as sucking up to people- Modesty: which means making yourself appear less intelligent or kind then you actually areo This isn’t good to do with people you just met because they actually don’t know anything about you so they could believe you and it can also be seen as “sandbagging”- Self promotion: which means to over emphasize your accomplishmentso Could come off as being cocky- Exemplification: play up your willingness to sacrifice thing for the organizationo Could be seen as hypocritical- Intimidation: using power to scare people into following youo Can lead to bullying or people resenting you- Supplication: kind of like modesty but the person actually try’s to come off helplesso Victim blaming - Self-handicapping: sabotaging yourself (partying before a big race and then losing then race the person then has an excuse to why they lost and if they do well then it can be seen as very impressive)o It is risky and you could actually fail or lose something very importantSelf-Monitoring- Changing our self presentation depending on who you are around or where you areo “Social chameleons” can get along with anyone- High self monitoring leads to less consistent behavioro But high self monitoring can lead to being liked moreo But this can hinder people from actually connecting with one another person because they are not showing their true selfSelf- Esteem- Evaluating of a persons self esteemo “Social barometer” how we feel about our self- High self esteem leads to positive evaluations vs. low self esteem leads to negative evaluations- Culture is an influence in self-esteemDifferent theories on how to handle self-esteem- Hot perspective: self enhancement working on improvement of ourselves- Cold perspective: self verification working on having consistency**People with high self esteem are consistent in both theories while people with low self esteem have conflicts**Characteristics of low self-esteem- Low self esteem is often just average- Positive events minimized while negative events take on more important- Is influenced by negative outcomesDrawbacks with high self-esteem- Related to antisocial personalities especial unrealistic high self esteem- Explicit vs. implicit self esteem (what do we say about ourselves vs. what we actual feel)- IAT test implicit association test (measures how we feel inside)o Person is asked to categorize statements that are positive about themselves and then negative about other people in another category and then they are asked todo the opposite. Then we would look at how long it took them to complete each task. If they more quickly put the positive words in their category maybe they have high
