REL 202 1st Edition Lecture 4Star Trek As A Religion- Star Trek is regarded as almost a religion for it’s fandom- The show has similarities to religion, a creation myth, followers, persecutors, ritual/ places of worshipo Creation Myth/Story- the show’s storyline and characterso Followers- Trekkies, the fanso Persecutors- Anyone outside of the fandom, someone who judges or bullieso Rituals/Places of Worship- Cons and conventions held for fans to gather and dress up and discuss- The Star Trek fandom has some of the most die-hard and devoted followers of all showso Fans fought to get it back on air after it was cancelled- Quasi-religion- Almost a religion- Conventions are held for people from all over the world to attend and dress up to participate- Star Trek, although it is fictitious, is treated like a real life thing when the fans go so far as to “worship” the showo The show is treated like the religion in the way that they know everything about it and treat it as if it were real. Knowing every fact down to every detailDiet Culture- Everyone is obsessed with having a small, fit figure nowadays- Many diets have come about and are being used in order to help Americans cope with this trend of being dangerously skinny- From juicing to eating everything people are desperate to find a way to lose weight- Models and the media often pressure us to be smaller- Runway models who model clothing have been under fire for a long time for being anorexic to the point of being close to deathThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
