Please contact her to make arrangements to have this form signed if needed.Class Meets: 3:30 – 4:45 p.m., Tues. and Thurs., 100 PH (Phillips Hall)Course Description: This course fulfills a General Education requirement in Natural Sciences. Itis designed for nonscience majors and aims to help students achieve a basic understanding of four aspects of human biology: cellular, genetic, physiological, and evolutionary. The course may be taken only with a lecture and a laboratory. There are two lectures per week delivered by a faculty member and one lab per week taught by an undergraduate or graduate TA. Please refer to the course website often to obtain up-to-date course information.1Required Reading and Supplies:1) The textbook we will use is Human Biology: Concepts and Current Issues, 7th edition, by Michael D. Johnson. The textbook for this course is mandatory, however you will havetwo choices to purchase:One is a three-ring-punched (or “a la carte”) version of the text. The cost for this version isapproximately $121.80. The a la carte version available at the bookstore is less expensive than the bound book version you might find elsewhere, and it is a customized version with three unused chapters removed to further reduce price. The content and page numbering isotherwise identical. This print version of the text comes packaged with an access code to Mastering Biology (see below).The second choice is an eBook version that can be used by purchasing an access code for Mastering Biology. You may print as many pages from the text as you would like, howeverthe access is only temporary. The cost for this version is approximately $72.25. On Mastering Biology, you will also have use of study aids, videos and practice quizzes to helpyou learn the course material.2) A laboratory manual is required for use in lab. The laboratory manual is 2014-2015 Human Biology Laboratory Manual (edited by Dr. Olga Miakotina); cost is approximately $35.30.3) You must purchase a Turning Technologies Response Card (or “Clicker”) at the bookstore for use during lectures. Ask at the checkout registers to purchase a clicker. The cost for a new clicker is $42.70; used clickers are available for $32.05. We will begin using these devices by the second week of class.The textbook choices and Laboratory Manual are available only at the University Book Storein the Old Capitol Mall.Grading: Grades will reflect performance on 4 Exams; Clicker Questions; and Laboratory points for attendance, presentations and participation, and quizzes.EXAM 1: 100 points M Feb. 16 6:30-8:00 p.m. Chap 1, 2, 3, 17EXAM 2: 100 points M Mar. 30 6:30-8:00 p.m. Chap 4, 17, 18, 19, 21,22EXAM 3 100 points M Apr. 20 6:30-8:00 p.m. Chap 7, 8, 10, 11, 12,13, 14FINAL EXAM: 200 points May 11-15 TBD Chap 5, 6, 9, 15, 162& CumulativeCLICKER QUES.: 90 points During lecturesLABORATORY: 200 pointsTOTAL: 790 pointsExams: All exams (except Final) will be given on the scheduled dates outside of class time on Mondays at the times listed above. Exams 1, 2 and 3 will all be held in MacBride Auditorium. Final Exam date, time and location are to be determined by the University after the start of the semester and will be announced. You are expected to take the exams at the scheduled time, barring only an emergency or medical excuse accompanied by documentation or a note from a doctor, or a University-sponsored event. Do NOT schedule vacations that will coincide with exam dates. Contact the Course Supervisor, Kris Williams, as soon as possible about make-up exams for excused absences only. You must provide written documentation for any excused absences. Make-up exams may consist of short answer and essay questions.Exams 1-3 will consist of 50 two-point multiple choice questions. The Final Exam will consist of 100 two-point multiple choice questions, half of which will be material from the last quarter of the semester, and the other half being comprehensive questions from material covered on Exams 1-3. Any questions about grading of an exam should be presented in writing to the instructor as soon as possible.Clicker Questions: During each lecture, there will be a variable number of questions displayed on the screen based on lecture material. You will answer these questions using your “clicker” or Response Card device. These questions will give you and the instructor immediate feedback about your understanding of course concepts, as well as recording your lecture attendance. Your clicker has a unique identification number that will record your answers to each question.- You must register your clicker ID number with your name before you will receive credit for answers! Go to http://icon.uiowa.edu, log in with your hawk ID and password, and then selectthe Student Tools option.- Attendance at lecture will be recorded as one “point” for each
