All this furor over “logistics” and “supply chain management” (and several other terms describing similar processes) seems to have come about only in the past few years. Is it REALLY such a big deal or are companies simply REPHRASING old ideas and practices?According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it defines logistics as, “the branch of military science relating to procuring, maintaining and transporting material, personnel, and facilities.” In contrast, the New Oxford American Dictionary defines logistics as, “ the detailed coordination of a complex operation involving many people, facilities, or supplies”. Logistics is commonly seen as a branch of engineering that creates “people systems” rather than “machine systems”, according to Wikipedia. So it is proven that logistics is originally a military tactic that transferred over to the business world because of its great deal of usefulness and its potential to fix and solve problems. Logistic has been around for awhile, with that being said, there are two different viewpoints of logistics : inbound and outbound logistics. Inbound is one of the primary processes of logistics, it concentrates on purchasing and arranging the inbound movement of material, parts, and/or finished inventory from suppliers to manufacturing or assembly plants, warehouses, or retail stores. Outbound is the process related to the storage and movement of the final product and the related information flows from the end of the production line to the end user. So, these two viewpoints of logistics have been viewpoints for awhile and not just as of late, the military has influence these tactics long before the emergence of “logistics/supply chain management”. With that being said there are several different fields of logistics that vary in performing specific tasks. The different fields of logistics are : procurement logistics, production logistics, distribution logistics, after-sales logistics, disposal logistics, reverse logistics, green logistics, domestics logistics, concierge logistics, RAM logistics. These are fields of logistics that have been created over time to make things a little bit more easier and efficient as well as organized. So in conclusion of whether or not logistics has been created in recent years or whether there are terms that simply rephrase old ideas and practices, in my opinion logistics has been around since the old days when the military was first enforcing it as there system of organization and productivity. Now, on to the term of supply chain management. A supply chain is a system of organizations, people, activities, information, and resources involved in moving a product or service from supplier to customer. This doesn’t seem like anything new, in fact it seems like this has been around for ages. Now over time there have been different models of supply chain management that have been formed being designed to work differently whether its on a global or national level. The primary purpose of supply chain management is to fulfill customer demands through the most efficient use of resources. In conclusion, I personally believe that companies are just simply taking old ideas and practices and improving them in different ways and then implementing them in todays business world to be as effective as possible.SCMT309 – Pappu, 9.18; QOTW #01All this furor over “logistics” and “supply chain management” (and several other terms describing similar processes) seems to have come about only in the past few years.
