Over a half-million people in the US are practicing social work.- Other professions, such as psychology and sociology, have contributed to the development of social work, but the profession of social work also has unique values, knowledge, and practice skills.- Social workers provide an ever-changing array of services such as counseling, advocacy, case management, education, prevention, support, and crisis intervention.- Social workers work with people throughout all areas of our society, including children, adolescents, and adults experiencing life changes or crises; persons who are struggling with an illness, disability, addiction, or homelessness; persons who are the victims of oppression, discrimination, or social injustice; and persons who have survived a disaster who have emigrated from their home country.- Social workers work in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, mental health facilities, and addiction treatment programs, advocacy programs, and residential facilities for children, youth, persons who are homeless, and older adults.- Social workers can obtain degrees at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.
