Chapter SummaryCurrent LectureContinuation of Chapter 1 – What is Mediated Communication?Mass-personal Communication- How useful is the distinction between mass, media and interpersonal communication? They are no longer separate, they are joined.o We use interpersonal channels for mass reasons Example: Marriage proposal on a jumbotron at a sporting evento We use mass channels for interpersonal reasons Example: posting a message on your friends Facebook timeline, that all of his friends and your friends can see- We call it Mass-personal Communicationo It’s a better way to describe how we interact with our technology- Mass-personal communication characteristicso Message Personalization, the degree to which a message was written intended for a particular individual o Message Access Exclusivity, the degree to which a message is accessible to the public.o Narrowcasting – creating content for a specific and smaller audience TV narrowcasts = while it’s a mass channel the channels have a specific audience, because there are so many channels, there’s one for everyone’s interests.- Traditionally,o Interpersonal Communication = High exclusivity & High personalizationo Mass Communication = Low exclusivity & Low personalizationo With Mass-personal communication the lines are blurred.Computer Mediated Communication (CMC)Computer (the use of computing technologies)Mediated (that carry messages)Communication (to stimulate meaning in the minds of others)- What role do computers play in the process of communication?o Technology and computers have made life less private, but communication easiero It changes the way we communicateo It means that small talk might be a thing of the past We research/ stalk people before we meet them, so we already know their interests before we meet them. So we can skip the small talk and go straight to the real content.Chapter Summary - Communication = audience centered process that should stimulate meaning in others- The divide between mass and interpersonal communication is not useful, given the way we use technology to interact- CMC is the study of how computers impact the human communication processo Social networking will be around for a very long timeChapter 2 – What is the Internet? Questions to consider:- What is the Internet?- Who runs the Internet?- Is the Internet a social space?World Wide Web (WWW) – is a service, an extension of the Internet that solves our issues with the Internet.- Created by Tim Berners Lee- He designed the technology and let users do what they want with itThe Internet is…- A connection of internets (series of networks) using TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol)- Arpen Net, which appeared in the 1960’s, was the earliest form of the Internet. It consisted of four universities out West that decided to link their computer systems in order to share research easier. - The Internet is a prime example of a decentralized organization o An organization without a central leader / no headquarterso Leadership is distributed among the users of the Internet. Users are one reason why the Internet has become largely successful. o Can be a blessing and a curse Users have free artistic range, just about anything goeso Analogy with a starfish No centralized nervous system = greater ease in shifting executive functions when damagedWho is in charge of the Internet? YOU- Users are in charge by generating and editing content- Example: Wikipediao It has grown beyond belief because of its userso The website does a good job at policing the content and it is easily updatedThe Internet as a social space- It used to be considered a digital space, used for people to connect and create- It has evolved to a social spaceo Characteristics: Generative = content is created by users Open = controlled by users Simple = there are few technical challenges and it can easily be used- Procrastination Principle – If its broke don’t fix it- Trust your neighbor Principle – mostly everyone on the Internet has good intentions when they are generating content- The way the Internet has evolved is thanks to people willing to make some mistakes when generating content and people willing to correct those mistakes.Web 2.0- Has shifted over the past 15 years; however, shifts are more philosophical than technical- Web 1.0 was based on the notion of read and retrieving informationo Used for checking sports scores and using AIMo There was no interactivity; users couldn’t control content- Web 2.0 is built on the foundation of creating and collaborating on informationo More creative; you’re allowed to add things to others creationso You have the ability to “Catfish” peopleo Instagram is the 2nd most popular social media site (behind Facebook); this showsthat we are turning into a visual society. We like looking, but not reading.- Web 2.0 Core Concepts (O’Reilly) that help differentiate it from Web 1.0o Services Over Software – You don’t have to use floppy disks to get a program, it is simply already on your computero Control of data gets better with use – Facebook wouldn’t be fun if people only published content once a yearo Trusting users as co-developers – Trust your neighbor principleo Harnessing collective intelligence – there are different level of expertise on a topic Example: on WebMD you can get a general Doctor and an Oncologists views on a particular disease.o “Using the long tail” – being able to hear from people we normally wouldn’t expect to hear from on a topic. Example: on WebMD a
