I. Sadur “Witch’s Tears”a. Nadia is trying to find the witch’s green house at nightb. Knocked and the door opened smelling like onionsc. There was a pig living in the shedd. A rug hanging on the wall with two deer fightinge. The witch transformed her purse into a white dovei. Dove had a heart that looked real but suspicious with a dark red spot in the middle of the heartii. The spot looked solid and prominent, like a stone in a medallionf. Witch pacing the room not saying/looking at Nadiag. Yellow curtains blocking the view of flowers that were starting to climb through the windowi. Witch freaked out screaming and stomping her feet saying “Out! Out!” to the flowers (weren’t real flowers, they were little round baby heads)ii. To keep herself from dying of fear, the girl squeezed her knees together and pushed them down with her fistsh. Nadia thought to tell her that she is was here to give the photo? to Vitka, her soldier and to give the witch her 15 rubles and leavei. Nadia didn’t want to look a the table because her heart would breaki. The thing that’s going to kill you attracts youii. Eyes looked at the circle of light on the table cloth with the dove frozen with its head cocked to the side, glazed eyes asleepiii. The beak pierced the red dot of blood and drank the blood within the dove and it froze/killed itselfiv. The dove fell onto the table with its wings spread out and beak half openj. Nadia said “I want trouble for him. He lied to me…he didn’t marry me…and I killed my baby. Give him trouble,” to the witchk. The witch took the photo, put it into a pot of water and grass then summoned the evil spirits while she was yawningl. The witch told her “You are going to go to the river now. You’ll walk backwards without looking until I say ‘Stop.’ Then you’ll take the stocking off you left leg and a hair off your left temple, and then he’ll have trouble.”m. There was a ship on the river with a old woman in white standing on shore, there was a moan at the window, and a wet ghost flew in wearing a soaked undershirti. Ghost fell to her knees and she said, “You killed me! You killed me instead of him!”ii. “Kindness is easy, light, and open; it has no fear – only joy. But when suffering turns to evil and evil is awakened, no one can tell what kind of torment it can bring, guided only by pain and injusticeII. Kipling, “The Law of the Jungle”a. A poem (no notes)III. Afanasev, “The Sorceress” and “The Vampire”a. The priest’s son went to an old woman to learn how to readb. Son saw princess through her window as she took off her head, soaped it, rinsed it, combed the hair, then put it back oni. Bot thought she was a magicianc. Princess was ill and said tol her father to make the boy read the psalter over her 3 consecutive nightsd. Old Woman told the boy to make a circle around him, read the psalter, and don’t look behind him or he would be losti. He did that, and at 12 midnight, the princess woke and tried to get at him from being angry of him looking through her window and then telling everyone what he sawii. The circle protected him and he kept readinge. Boy was told to nail the coffin shut the next night…she woke again andtried to attack him again…she went back in the coffin before daybreakf. Next morning the boy told the king everything and ordered a spike to be engorged into her chest and then buried in the groundIV. Ralston, “The Soldier and the Vampire”a. A soldier was allowed to go home and he was walking till he got tired and went to his native villageb. Went to see friend and reminisced, hen spent a nightc. He left and the road was in front of a graveyard; one of the graves was on fire; his curiousity led him to asking the warlocki. Warlock invited him to a weddingd. The warlock kicked all the guests out, threw the couple into a slumber and drew both of their blood into vialse. Warlock threatened to kill the soldier to avoid him spreading what he just witnessedf. Warlock fell lifeless to the ground and the soldier took the vials of bloodg. Soldier went to go revive the couple’s lives, then went back and burned the warlock’s corpse; the city was at peace!V. Ivanits, “The Colonel and the Witch”a. Some people fed a changeling bread until he turned into a humani. 7 years passed, and the wolf’s hid burst apart and slid off him and became a personb. A peasant sat outside to see who had been stealing milk from his farm;saw a cat who turned into a bare-headed woman who begame to milk the cowi. The peasant chopped her hand off with the axe and she disappearedii. Went into the house and saw his mother with her hand chopped off moaningc. Soldier and witch lived in same quartersi. Soldier disobeyed orders to stay in colonels quarters and wen to the witch’s houseii. Soldier “rode” her and whipped her (sex?) then she turned intoa horse after whipping her with the bridleiii. He told a blacksmith to shoe her (horseshoe?)iv. She hid on the stove, but came down and asked the colonel to unshoed her, and if so, she will abandon her professionv. Colonel mounted her and took off her shoes, and the witch stopped riding the soldier, and passed on her professionVI. Pelevin “A Werewolf Problem in Central Russia”a. Sasha trying to hitchhike but no one stopped for him; the Zil rattled past himb. Sash imagined Tverskoi Blvd in Moscow overgrown with sunflowers, with a cow occasionally lowing in the distance; he imagined it way more lushc. Sasha watched a film in the village clubd. Most women who let people in to spend a night live in the same mythical placese. Walking and stopped by a folk in the road and chose left but it happened to be the wrong wayi. Now walking alone aimlessly in the moonlight; at “Friendship” processed cheesef. Spotted 2 cars that had stopped on the side of the rode and turned on loud music; Sasha hid behind a tree in the forestg. Sasha was found by a girl who snuck up behind him; she said “Don’t try to run, you’d better wait about 5 minutes and then walk over to thefire as if you belong here…Make wild eyes…They’ll ask you who you are and what you re doing here…you tell them that you heard the call.”h. The guys had Sasha fill out a personal bio form and suddenly a man was rolling on the ground transforming into a werewolfi. The girl (Lena) gave Sasha a drink and he turned into a werewolfj. The woman who gave the elixir was the only one still in human form; she wore beads and
